The difficulty of answering your question is that there are SO VERY MANY books on Beginning PHP, many of them very good, and more are published nearly every month, that nobody can keep up with them. I recommend that you research the books at Amazon.com or BN.com or APress.com and look for those that say they are for beginners. I understand that you would like for someone to recommend one or two books for you, but believe me, you will do better just to research it yourself. Otherwise, you will be following advice from people whose learning habits may be quite different from yours. [This advice comes from a teacher.]

Visit a local book store. Look for the technology/computers/programming section. Find book with PHP in the title (preferably PHP 5), begin reading. If what the book says make sense to you for the most part, it may be a decent book for you.

Then do like feyd suggested and get into the PHP manual. There are examples on almost every manual page that are helpful in moving you along.
