Civ4

Post by jason »

Yeah, it's not new, but I recently picked it up after finishing BioShock.

Dear God, why? I thought WoW was addictive.

I never got to try it. I almost did once because my father had a copy, but he wouldn't open it since Sid Meier signed it.
I was addicted to Civ2 and Civ3 though. I always had to quit cold-turkey. :P

Yeah, I finally broke my WoW addiction. I hadn't gotten my 'focused on leveling' character to 60 (despite Burning Crusade raising the cap to 70), when they announced the next expansion. Which raised the cap to 80 - with the statement that it would take longer to get from 70 to 80, than it did to get from 60-70, which in turn was longer than 40-60.

What. The. Hell.

So yeah, cancelled my subscription then. I was barely able to play for 2-3 hours during the week, and maybe 8 hours total on weekends if I totally accepted being beaten upon by my wife for ignoring everything. When THAT isn't enough, its not a game, its a job.

I too found the siren call of Civ 4 amazingly enticing, and I enjoyed its flavor for quite some time. It is definitely much better than Civ3, but still isn't as snappy as the original Civ. I could play a small game of Civ in hours, and a huge game in about 9 hours. No Civ since the original has come close.

But oh, its so nice.

Lately, I've been enjoying my exploration of new technologies more. iPhone, Macbook, Lighttpd web server, Postgresql database server, Parallels for virtualization, and so forth. I'm having a ton of fun with technology, and I haven't gotten to do that in YEARS.

Makes games look relatively boring.

I choose to play video games that are relaxing, instead of addicting.

Like whenever I get done coding for a bit, or just want to do nothing, I play Excite Truck on the wii. Already beat it, but it's fun to just have a race every now and then.
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

me and my old roomate used to play civ4 all night long. The problem was that one or the other would dominate the game and it would be no fun at the end. I don't think we ever finished an actual game but it was a lot of fun building your empire and crushing uprisings and all that fun stuff.

definatly a very awesome game just not one that I would play alone. Best when played with a friend

Minesweeper and solitaire for me. Sometimes I actually use real cards when playing solitaire, too. Yes, the game was once played with real cards.

My prob with using real cards to play solitaire is that I'm always tempted to cheat

Haven't actually tried Civ 4... probably because i thought civ 3 sucked. But Civ 2 is still on the top 5 of my all time favorite games :)

What i love though, is the xBox Live Arcade concept. Don't have to buy new games as long as they release TMNT, Sensible world of soccer and the likes :P

Guitar hero is fun, but becomes boring when you're stuck at second level on hard :(
