Almost Impossible to register...

It took me almost 10 mins to register for this site. Half of the time, the confirmation could picture would not load, then the anti-bot thing would not work...
Why is all that junk setup for this site?

I'm no moderator, but I'm pretty sure that since this forum is so well-known and -indexed, they get a lot of spam bots attempting to post onto it. I don't personally remember the process taking long, but it is very effective.

10 minutes is not forever. You'll survive.

Ten minutes is a serious barrier to entry considering the amount of time the average surfer sticks around.

Took me under a minute to register. I seriously suspect typing speed has something to do with it.

There are a lot of things that could have caused such an exhaustive amount of time to transpire. First, how many passes did it take to actually complete the registration? Second, how long did it take for your mail client to tell you that you had mail?
10 minutes is not a long time from start to finish, but if it took 10 minutes to get from the initial registration form to the 'Please check your mail for an activation key' then that is a potential problem.
And to answer your question about why we do that... we are a very popular board and we get a pretty good amount of spam around here. A little inconvenience to the real users registration process is a small price to pay for keeping out the hundreds of daily spam posts we could be getting.

It took me less that a minute to register.. and I did it just now
The only thing that bothered me was that the confirmation email includes your password. Whenever I see that I get concerned. Is the password stored in plaintext on the server?

Oh god, yeah I hate that. Please fix that.

phpBB converts all passwords to unrecoverable hash through its own hashing mechanism. you needn't worry...

What about having my password stored as plain text on various email servers and my own machine?

well, can say you have a point there... I thought you were referring to phpBB's password storage. I am sure this is pretty simple hack to begin with.

I think we've had a discussion regarding this, as well as it not exactly being a "simple hack."

It is a fairly simple hack, but I think that the moderators and admins have discussed not hacking the current codebase too much until we go to phpBB3. I think that is what we are talking about at the moment.

It didn't take me that long when I registered today, but it did take longer to go through the process than most forums (due to the extra spam-proofing measures). Still not too bad, though. It sounds like, in your experience, the images didn't load.. which is odd.. but to contribute results of my experiences: everything loaded fine for me right away.
