Finally I don't have to deal with the hassle of buying an iPhone and no service activation on a service I won't use. Instead I get all the features (almost) of the iPhone, at a much cheaper cost

(iPhone price dropped to $399 for the 8gb), $299 for 8gb, and $399 for 16gb.
WiFi enabled, and the iTunes store also went WiFi enabled today as well, so instant downloads of songs straight to your iPod, no computer necessary.
Anyone else gonna snag one like me?

I watched the keynote, and almost got tempted to get one for my wife instead of a laptop. She basically mostly browses anyway, so it wouldn't be a huge impact for her.
However, a few things stuck out. First, its not most of the functionality. Its missing camera, stocks, maps, weather, and notes. She *loves* her cellphone camera, so thats a big left-out feature for her. Then add in maps (which I've gotten addicted to.. its SO useful), and no notes??
Its an oddball mix. I'm really not sure why they didn't include those.
The starbucks thing sounded great - until they mentioned that you don't get full wireless browsing with it. Just iTunes wireless store. Blah.
Then add in that its (far) less storage than the other iPods, and well.. its not quite as delicious.
I will take the wireless iTunes store. Should have been there at the launch of the iPhone.
But honestly, I was holding out for the next iTunes update before hacking much on my iPhone, as I figured they might come out with some wicked new stuff. Not anymore.. Its time to unleash the iPhone. If Apple won't, I will.

It's tempting because it's a shiny gadget but I don't have any use for one.
That doesn't usually stop me buying something though *looks around at all the unused gadgets in Onion's office*.

With the mention of the 4Gb iPhone being retired and the 8Gb being reduced in price, I am wondering if there are plans for a 16Gb iPhone. That would be uber-sweet.

It's got full-fledged browsing (according to their site, it uses Safari) just like the iPhone. So in essence, you can do maps, stocks, weather and notes all online. As for a camera, eh, I don't care either way. I never use any cellphone cameras, the quality is horrendous even with the "1+ megapixel" cameras in most of todays phones. I'll stick to my 7mp digicam when I want pictures.

The new iPods are freaking awesome. Apple did some amazing stuff with their new product line (iPod Nano Video, iPod Touch, 160Gb iPod Classic) and their new pricing though. I am seriously leaning toward an iPhone now, but part of me thinks that a 16Gb iPhone is not that out of the question really soon.

I bought an 8GB refurb iPhone just before the price break - they refunded the difference after a quick call. I value the tiny camera and the e-mail app, as well as having the iPod functionality when I want to leave my pod at home. Mobile data rates in Canada are ridiculous so it'll be purely wifi for me, no EDGE.
I figure I got an 8GB touch with all that other stuff (cell phone, email, better apps, camera, etc..) for $50 more. Sweet deal if you ask me!

Yep, I think I will be getting me one of these babies sooner than later.

oh, and I'll replace my 40GB iPod Photo (remember those?) with a > 160GB touch, if and when they ever exist.

You know the classics are now 80 and 160 only. That is a nice improvement, especially over my 20Gb, which, when I got it, was the hottest thing since JalapeƱo peppers with Tabasco sauce.

And how are you finding it, if I may ask? I'm seriously considering placing an order the minute they are released in the UK.

Hasn't arrived yet - ordered last week via a friend in the US, and it's just been re-shipped by her. I'll keep y'all posted!

Hey Phoenix, did you happen to get your iphone when it was $200 cheaper? If not, how do you feel about that? (I'm starting sound like a psychiatrist, or something...

)

How *could* he feel about that?

That's a risk you take when you buy a "big deal" electronic device before the first price drop. But, you get to HAVE it (and, rub it in your friends' faces).

I can't believe the iphone at only 8gigs is even popular. 8 gigs is so tiny. I also read a breakdown of how much it basically costs apple to make one and it was somewhere in the $250-$300 range. After reading that i was convinced that I didn't need one. ...especially at $600. I'm glad they dropped price though, and offered a $100 rebate to people who bought it at $600.
