Fantasy author Jordan dies at 58
I would like to add my condolences for his family but coldhearted that I am... at least he should have finished his 12th book which was as far as I am aware to be the last of the series. I wonder how near completion it was and if it will be published anyway. Always had a sense of dread in his bio and the end of the books when he stated "I will write until I die".

I bought The Eye Of The World in 1991. I bought the rest within days of their release - Harry Potter could go jump off a cliff so long as I got those new releases asap! As a series, it has to be one of the best out there with enough attention to detail that Middle-Earth lore almost looks like a pale comparison. It's a sad way to go for such an author, he has been building the series for over 20 years since he created a character called "Conan The Barbarian" - who I think we all recognise.
I doubt the 12th was the last book. I remember reading an interview where he was limiting the completion to books 12-13. Around Book 3, there was so much going on it was like reading three books in parallel.
I certainly add my condolences; he was probably my favourite author of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre.
Few other people write such broad sagas anymore. I'm guessing the series will get finished - I think it was obvious to everyone he knew how this story was going to end. Hopefully they can find a really good author to conclude the series the way Jordan would have wanted at some future point.

On his site, there is a previous blog posting discussing that topic. Apparently, he originally intended for the 11th book to be the finale *if* he couldn't make it to the finish of the 12th book. He didn't want the series to change tone.
However, in his final days, he went through notes, summaries, and a discussion with several close friends on the 12th book so that it could be finished if he couldn't make it. Whether they will choose to do so is another issue entirely, but apparently he did make arrangements to make it possible.
Its an amazing testimony of his will and his desire to please even the most cold hearted of fans.
