Blurry External Monitor Text

I bought a laptop a while back and whenever I attach an external monitor to it via a VGA port the text is blurry even at the native resolution of 1600x1200.
I have installed the latest drivers for both the monitor and the video card. I need to get this working otherwise I'll just sell the laptop. I was going to use this as a desktop replacement and if I can't attach an external monitor it's pretty much useless to me.

Try changing the hertz on your video card output

Already tried that. The monitor doesn't like anything other than 60.

This isn't really much my area...
But do you have truetype fonts? Or any settings related to the settings of fonts?
Seems odd text would be blurry but nothing else.

Yeah I have truetype turned on. It seems like the video card is using the resolution of the laptop monitor and upscaling it to 1600x1200 for the external display. It does it in both Linux and Windows.

Do you have ClearType on and/or tweaked? It may also be a font size choice issue.
Worst case, the laptop doesn't actually support the resolution (well.) Therefore it may need to be switched to a lower resolution.

I'm fairly certain that the resolution being sent to the secondary monitor is different than what I have it set to. It looks just like it would if it was running at a lower than native resolution. The card is the
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_87 ... specs.html so I know it supports that resolution. If there is something else in here that would limit the resolution that would be one thing, but it's really annoying that it's telling me one thing while doing another.
I believe this is a bug in either the driver or more likely, firmware for this card.

Have you tried different cables? Cable variances may cause such issues too.

No I haven't, but I do receive a clear screen when the monitor is hooked up to other computers using the same cable.

Do you have alternate monitors to test against this computer then? It may potentially be a faulty connector.

Not on-hand. I'm in the process of moving. I did hook the same monitor up to a different laptop and it worked correctly though.
