software for full hard disk encryption?

Post by Joinha »

I know this forum is not about encryption software but i need some help. My boss asked me to choose a software to encrypt the OS partition. I found this DriveCrypt Plus Pack, but i don't know if it is a good software... Does anybody knows this software? Or another good one?
Thanks a lot...

I'd choose hardware encryption if it was important.

I did an evaluation of full disk encryption about a year ago for a very large enterprise.

I ended up endorsing PGP's whole disk encryption as fairly close to ideal. We needed the ability to access an encrypted disk for corporate investigations, and PGP offers a multi-key system. That way, the user has his key, and the security team has one as well.

The software was very fast, full featured, and most users in IT we tested it with liked the interface. They rolled it out, and had no major issues with it on a deployment of several hundred computers over the last year.

The secondary suggestion was Windows BitLocker, which wasn't bad, it just required an upgrade (Vista) that we couldn't do in a short period of time.

When evaluating software, you should lay down your requirements first, then evaluate the products, then reconsider your requirements, and finally score all of the packages objectively. Many times you will find that you are drawn to a product that isn't 'winning' in the scoring, and that generally means you didn't define a requirement (well enough).

Very well said, PGP software is a very good one. But i've been using DriveCrypt Plus Pack for several months, and it's been very useful and works very good so far. I rather "DriveCrypt P.P" because it's tools fits better to my requirements. And i've found a very good tool that creates a "Hidden OS", where you can create two diferent passwords to access your OS.
With one of them you can access the fake one, if necessary to show some fake information to someone, and the other password to access the real OS.
Make your choice buddie, both good softwares, it depends of your requirements.

Hi,

I've tested Drive Crypt Plus Pack, as a matter of fact I use it on a daily basis. It's a very good software and quite unique, in my opinion. The encryption algorithms are very strong. I never encountered problems with it and I am very satisfied. Someone specified that they lost their data while using this soft - well you have the option to create an emergency disk for cases like this. I took the liberty to present you with some of the main features of this soft that helped me so much, just to clarify your doubts ;)

1. Boot protection

2. Pre-Boot authentication: Login before starting the operating system

3. Multiple OS boot support (Microsoft)

4. Invisible operating system (possibility to hide the entire operating system)

5. Full or partial hard disk encryption

6. Sector level protection

7. Complete "power off" protection i.e. unauthorized users are prohibited from starting up the PC

8. AES 256 bit encryption

9. Full hibernation support (hibernation files and disk-dump data are securely encrypted)

10.No size limitation for encrypted disks

With the software you also get the possibility to hide data into music or picture files.

I hope you will try to use Drive Crypt Plus Pack, my personal opinion about it is that it's the best on the market.

Cheers!

Hi 2 all,

My company is using on several machines DCPP with registered license and we had no real problem with it. You just have to follow the instruction, read the help file carefully. The only trouble with it (this is my opinion) is when you do an upgrade or move the license on another PC, because it take some time to decrypt the OS and remove the bootauth. However this is a minor problem and nobody does it very often. So from my point of view the program is OK.
