Site problems

Post by Stryks »

Is anyone else having issues with this site lately?

Alot of
phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

and a fair share of download prompts for php pages.

Getting this from work and home, so I assume it's not just me.

Yes, we have had several outages today. Rest assured, we are working to rectify the issues ;)

Apologies for any inconvenience it may have caused.

No biggie.

Just that I've been encountering it more and more over the last few weeks ... thought it might be worth letting someone know.

Cheers

The download prompt issue is something that we have not identified the cause, simply because it is so far unreproducible. Hopefully when we find a new provider things will be a lot smoother around here.

FYI, we have had three major database issues within the last four days. I am not sure what the cause is. Help tickets have gone unanswered. Support requests seem to have been ignored.

We are actively and aggressively seeking other hosting options at the moment. Bear with us. This will improve.

Maybe you should ask for help on the database forum ;)

Why is this never talked about publicly? Maybe I'm missing something but for a community based website hiding this behind the veil of a hidden forum sounds shady to me. Spill the beans.

There are some things that are kept between the mods and admins until the time is right to inform the community. What has happened over the last few days, at the moment, is primarily to responsibility of the mods and admins to resolve. When it is resolved we will inform the community as to what took place.

This is a fairly common practice as it relates to changes, rules, appointments and the like. We are not hiding behind a veil. We are merely handling the administration of the forums as administrators and moderators.

As for spilling the beans, well, basically we are still not sure exactly what has happened over the course of the last few days. We are still investigating the cause(s) of the outages and the future countermeasures that will be taken to prevent them from happening again. New hosting is just one potential countermeasure.

Which host are you using, if you are comfortable disclosing its name?

As a forum admin elsewhere I totally back Everah's (and the mods in general) stance on this. There's no point in discussing board problems in an open forum, it usually only stirs up unhelpful crap. As users we can just benefit from the forum without having to do any of he maintenance.. trust me when I tell you what a sweet deal we have.

Besides, I think we can agree that the mods and admins here are all competent programmers ;) Who else would be better suited to solve the issue?*

*rhetorical, btw

No disagreements there. As a long time site user though, (been here almost since the start), I have both taken and contributed to this site quite a bit. It irks me a little bit that anytime any questions were asked regarding previous hosting issues the answer was always, "This issue is being discussed by the moderators". I like to know what is going on and I care about the quality and future of this website.

Since I do not have moderator privileges, I can't login and read about what's going on, and I don't think it's appropriate for me to PM mods asking what is going on. Therefore I'll ask here.

I asked and received an answer. I'm happy with that. If y'all want to make me a mod so I can possibly help with these processes that would be fine. I hate to bring these issues up in public. I already found someone who volunteered to host this site. Whether or not he was willing to accept the terms requested, I don't know.

@astions: My post wasn't aimed at you, in fact quite the opposite!

Sorry for the undue confusion 8)

Ok, I'll bite.

Who *were* you referring to?

Are you suggesting that I shouldn't raise problems I've experienced publicly?
