Devnet problems

I have been having some problems accessing devnet from work recently. It will work fine usually but sometimes i will click a link and it will be really slow and then instead of loading the page it will ask me if I want to download the php file instead but of course the file is just a empty php file so thats no fun.

If I wait like 30 seconds after this, it will work just fine but will be slow like it has seemed to be recently.

Any ideas?

As has been noted in a few other threads, the server itself is having a few problems we are trying to work out with our host currently. I just had them restart the database, which hopefully will alleviate the lagging issues that are going on right now. It probably isn't a long term solution, but it's a quick fix. I've got them monitoring things so we can figure out a longer term solution as we potentially look for new hosting solutions.

feyd, we really appreciate all your work (and whoever else may be involved with administering this excellent forum). These performance issues are annoying to the casual forum user, but they must be a real nightmare to those who feel the burden of keeping it going. THANKS!

Admittedly is frustrating...but I can certainly appreciate your efforts feyd.

However, If it were under my control, I would just start selling adspace, make money and use that to keep things running smoothly.

I have no problems with small banners or text ads...just no massive banners or popups... :)

We tested ads. They failed.

They failed because this place has far too much of an 'open source' mentality. There's nothing wrong with a few ads here and there.. especcially if it can keep this place running smoothly.

I will go as far as to say that I enjoyed the ads. They were relevant, and I even clicked a few because they seemed interesting and went along with the subject at hand.

Someone needs to say "this is the way it is, there are ads, deal with it!" :)

Is it acceptable to ask who is paying for the hosting? And are there other costs not immediately obvious to us? I am not trying to steer anyone to a particular service, but I have an unlimited domains shared hosting account with 100 GB of storage, 1,000 GB monthly transfer, 25 MySQL databases and excellent tech support, for about $5/month, depending on length of contract. I've been with them for a year and found them to be very reliable.

As to ads, as others have said, I wouldn't mind a FEW, SMALL ads, but maybe a few of us would be willing to chip in a few bucks a year; I certainly would.

Hosting is currently donated to us. We are pursuing some leads to switch to another donated server through another host right now.

We would prefer to continue to provide this service without ads. We are pretty adamant that we will not install ads for any reason right now or the foreseeable future.

Ads failed? I can't recall seeing any ads...

Anyways...I don't see how ads could be a bad thing...as long as thier not over powering.

They were only visible on the sub-silver forum theme and not sherbet. Those using sherbet, such as myself, would be oblivious to them.

I admire that policy. If you would like to move to a low-cost but professional web hosting service, I will personally donate the first year's cost. I'll bet there are others who would be willing to chip in some, too. I wouldn't like to see it become a pay-to-join forum, just several of us who can afford to shell out a little bit in return for the valuable information we all benefit from. Anybody else willing to sponsor a year's commercial hosting? (Around US$60 a year) Or even 6 months worth. It would take only a handful of us to assure good service for years to come.

That's not a bad thought, unfortunately everything works fine on a lot of these cheap hosts until you start doing anything that requires a good bit of CPU usage, database queries/connections or even bandwidth. Only then do you realize that your only getting what your paying for. I pay $39.95 a month for a VPS, which meets my needs, and I don't even really have any high traffic sites on it.

EDIT: I had one host that provided SSH access, but you couldn't even unzip a file with it. As soon as the server detected anything using CPU usage, it would kill the process 8O
