How to test drive KDE 4 in plain English?

Post by JAB Creations »

I would like to test out KDE4 and the updated version of the KHTML rendering engine. I am not great with Linux and don't have the time to muck about in consoles when other OS's have almost everything available via GUI (save ping and some other DOS fundamentals). I do have openSUSE 10.2 running on VMware Server which I test out Konqueror with. Unless there is a setup GUI (what is the EXE/GUI equivalent in Linux again?) available I know I'll have to have KDE4 pre-installed in the ISO to be able to have it installed and test it out. It's been a while since I've done anything save run Linux on VMware Server. Which flavor of Linux doesn't matter, I'm more (really only) interested in the rendering engine.

Sounds like a job for Kubuntu! The install CD is also a live cd, you can just boot into it without installing.

Bootable CDs are nice though I'd like to run it through VMware Server.

As far as KDE 4 there are instructions here but they are beyond me...

Before I waste someone's bandwidth I want to know what non-console method I can get KDE 4 working. I've used Kubuntu before though on a personal level prefer Ubuntu's slimmed down GUI (though still can't install anything without the console!)

Each of the GUI variants of Ubuntu include front-ends for apt. They all use "apt" in their name, if I remember correctly.

Run the bootable ISO from inside the VM.

"Synaptic" in Gnome, "GDebi KDE" in KDE.

I was under the impression that KDE4 was the default WM in Kubuntu 7.10, but it appears that it's only available as a beta. No wonder I wasn't so impressed when I checked it out...

Looks like I'll be checking out this preview live CD!
