Key points to being a professional server administrator?
I'm currently writing a new article for my website explaining the four roles of a proper web team though would like input on a role that is a bit more vague then the other roles to me: server administrator. I'm writing this with an emphasis on moderate to large sized companies and in for example where a company has decided to not cut corners by voiding roles in making a web developer (serverside specialist) do web design (clientside), the server administrator do web graphics, and so forth. I'm not interesting in debating roles, just interested in people's input on what a professional server administrator's roles are presuming they aren't being told to do non-server administration. Thanks!

Where I work we have a team of 12 people: 1 Director, 3 help desk (1 of which is the Network Admin), 2 Web developers, 1 Computer manager (the Server admin) and 5 DBA's.
Of this motley crew
, our server admin is the guy responsible for procuring and provisioning servers, connecting them to the network (working with the network admin) and setting up users on the machine. He is also responsible for the hardware configs on the servers as well as the core configs of the software on the servers.
The web team is responsible for configuring the web parts of the server. The DBAs are responsible for the database configs on the servers.
Does that make any sense at all?

We have one senior DBA, a junior DBA and three other DBA types that work closer with our internal customers than with the data. However, one of those DBAs is an Access specialist so she spends a lot of time in Access. Although we are phasing that out continually so she will be developing PHP apps now, hitting MySQL, Sybase and SQL server.
