We're seriously considering the creation of a non-profit to be an account holder for the donated funds for our forthcoming new hosting. We'll let you guys know more as we confirm things ourselves.
We are, for the most part, no longer looking for donated hosting, but instead purchasing it ourselves so we are no longer at the mercy of our host's whims. Stay tuned.

The creation of a non-profit (or any other legal entity, for that matter) seems like it would be counter-productive for the amount of money we're talking about. Like that Office episode where Michael raised $500 to fight rabies only to spend most of it on a giant cheque and a stripper to accept it.
One year of Slicehost is only $240 - I'd trust any of you mods with that.
@feyd: just set up a Paypal account and let's call it a day.

We need to have ethical, responsible and documented use of the money. We can't leave it up to any single person to have control over. A non-profit, while a pain in paperwork, is generally the best solution as we would only have to pay few, if any, taxes. If we made a for-profit corporation it would require whole different sets of paperwork that are even more painful when it comes to taxation.
In setting up a non-profit we can also shift those to supporting open source projects and other efforts for the community here as well as at large.

Covering the same ground...
If a non-profit/other shows up I'll certainly subscribe donations. From a personal perspective, this forum is one of my primary contacts to the community in PHP outside a few individuals so I value it quite a bit. I'd seriously just write a standing order, send to my bank, and happily watch $10+ per month heading off to help the forum and other services stay in the black.
It's a pittance compared to the hours I've racked up reading posts or writing them and the relative enjoyment of each.
