Quite a signficant improvement! My "graphics" went from 2.1.. pretty low, to 5.9.. the highest windows base score will go. :)

It's also interesting to note that my memory improved quite a bit, I guess from the video card having 512mb on board.

Now I can't get my sound to work. I don't know why really. My monitor has built in speakers, and I've tested with a regular set of speakers using the line out port on the back of my tower.

I have:

Sound/Audio
Integrated High Definition audio

* Realtek ALC 883 chipset
* Supports up to 8 audio channels
* Dolby Pro Logic II compatible

Windows says it's configured properly, and the windows tests all come through good.. but no sound! I wouldn't think changing my video card would affect the sound.

You didn't happen to hook up the front panel audio connectors, did you? That often disables the rear ports.

I don't have any front panel audio connectors.

But actually, my video card features says

"HIS Radeon™ HD 2600 features hardware HD video processing and HDMI with built-in 5.1 surround audio"

But there are no audio ports on the video card.. only an s-video port and two vga ports.

I don't know where I got that realtek thing from ( i copy/pasted though )

In system information, it says:

Sound Device: High Definition Audio Device
Manufacturer: Microsoft
Status: OK

I need sound. :(

edit| I do I have front panel audio ports. but the sound doesn't work through those either.

Check installed devices for any related to sound - and update your sound system's drivers. Sometimes you get a few conflicts installing new hardware that need some gentle persuasion to get fixed. I currently have the pleasure of needing to put my sound card into the last possible PCI slot otherwise it refuses to be detected.

The ATI card does have sound - it's digital and integrated into the HDMI output. No analogue connectors would be visible since it's only usable when connecting to an HDMI device.

Interesting whether Winblows-To-Hell detected it properly? I'd suggest digging up the latest drivers for your sound (check the device details for a manufacturer), and the video card itself, and trying those. It's usually unlikely AMD/ATI would sit on their hands if the card is messing up onboard audio users. If you're using the driver that came in the box, that's the most likely problem - a lot of cards ship with very early driver versions that are less than perfect. You probably got the very first (inevitably buggy) original driver in the box.

Have you checked the Device Manager in case it's listing any device conflicts? With dodgy drivers you usually get conflicts, or unknown PCI devices being reported.

I've figured out the problem (I think).

Since I've installed my video card, it's using the built in audio device it has (which is the HDMI device). My monitor (even though I just bought a new one today!) doesn't have an HDMI port. It does however, have a DVI port, but DVI is video only, doesn't support audio.

I think my only two choices are 1) Send back the video card and get one without a built in audio device, or 2) configure my computer to use the audio device built onto the motherboard (realtek audio device..)

Both of which seem like a hassle. =/

NICE!

I edited my bios onboard sound configuration which was set to (auto) to (enable). Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for my onboard audio device, and now it's working with that audio device!

It may not be HDMI (if that sound quality is better or not) but at least I have sound now!!! :-D yayyyy.

That was it then - usually my own BIOS just has enable/disable options for on board audio. Haven't seen an auto detect option previously. At least I know how the debug the next time my Xi-Fi card goes to the wall on a new motherboard for mysterious reasons ;).
