Re: IE8: "On the path to Web Standards Compliance"
What did I tell you? Only Microsoft can be that stupid.
Re: IE8: "On the path to Web Standards Compliance"
I just can't believe how utterly stupid they, at MS, are..

So how about just rendering in standards mode as default, just like nearly all other browsers, thicko?· Q: Why does IE need an additional standards mode, and other browsers don’t?
· A: The expectation of pre-existing sites for how “standards mode” functions actually differs significantly across browsers. Many sites today are coded to work properly in other browsers under those browsers’ standards modes, but then hand IE7 a different set of content or styling under that same mode. Our goal is to encourage interoperability for web developers; our new standards mode will attempt to be interoperable with other browsers’ standards modes, so that in other browsers, the page can continue to be rendered by their standards mode.
Re: IE8: "On the path to Web Standards Compliance"
This is the key issue. Our standards mode versus their standards mode. Wake up Microsoft, "their standards mode" is the standards mode.our new standards mode will attempt to be interoperable with other browsers’ standards modes, so that in other browsers, the page can continue to be rendered by their standards mode
When I build a quality website, it works in all modern browsers. Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc. I can't remember having to fix anything for those. I don't have to add conditional comments or meta tags to have my websites render correctly in FF1, FF1.5, FF 2.0, Opera 8.6 etc etc. It just works.
I was looking forward to the day IE6 markets share is so low I could ditch those IE6 conditional comments. Well, now this. Welcome back to reality.

I had to laugh when I saw the new IE8 markup scheme, but it was an uncomfortable laugh at best... like when you see a train hit a hobo.

wtf just happened here?
Apparently the IE team worked with WASP.
I'd say the people at WASP are to blame. They are supposed to be experts.IEBlog wrote:With this painful and unexpected lesson under our belt, we worked together with The Web Standards Project

in this context,
not that I hate Microsoft or any of its products but if someone knows a petition to sign so that IE is forbidden by law...let me know.. I wish to sign.

Re: IE8: "On the path to Web Standards Compliance"
From Microsoft's viewpoint I can understand this step.
A lot of websites have been build solely for IE6 (even 5). A lot of software from Microsoft is build in such a way that it produces IE-6 specific code. Read: html-crap. So a lot of big corporate clients having intranets, Microsoft software and products. Now IE7 comes out. Suddenly a lot of those websites, intranets and email letters "break". Clients angry at Microsoft.
They don't want that to happen again when IE8 comes out.
However, they should have done it the other way around. Someone who wants to have his website rendered as IE6-crap or IE7, should be able to add a metatag saying "this website should be rendered as IE6-site". That way, every website developed according to webstandards can just be build in one, correct way, and will work in every modern (and future) browser. No need for a stupid meta tag.
I really hope the other browser don't follow this proposal. I'm also very disappointed in those webstandard guru's like Meyer and Zeldman, going along with this.

For the web at large I want people's sites to break, so that they have to fix them. Once that happens we never have to worry about this problem ever again. And it's not unreasonable to break people's sites because an old website is a bad website.

I agree with Ole. Things should be standard. If they break because they are not, then they should be fixed to be.
