Okay, folks. I have made a page that gets your IP (don't be frightened)
You also put in your PHPDN username, and your city & state/country. Then, you are added to the list below. This way, if everyone cooperates, we will have a large ip map, and everyone can benefit!

Just go to the address below:
You don't have to enter anything, but you can see where other users are, and what they're IPs are.

http://nucleussystems.com/ip.php

Thanks, all!

Note: for those who don't know, IP addresses reflect the person's location.

There is already a thread around here somewhere where people can add themselves to a map for Devnetwork. I think I would prefer to use a service than to have someone collecting IP addresses.

Does anyone know where that map is?

Lol ta - I don't mind my IP being stored there - but being on display for all to see is a different matter.

Does anyone know where the previous thread was. It already had a number of members locations. I think it was called "Where you be?" or something like that...

I see. I'll have to use that sometime. :D

I'll check out that thread.

Also, it is not visible to the whole world; only to those on the forum. Unless, of course, someone randomly typed in "www.nucleussystems.com/ip.php", which is unlikely

As that was already setup for the same purpose and has a good number of member's locations already, it makes sense to keep using it.

Not entirely true. It depends on who the owner is of the IP address. If it comes from a small block of IP addresses owned by a small ISP who serves a limited geographic area, or a localized company, then it may reflect the location (of the ISP). But big ISP's, like AOL and MSN and others, get blocks of IP addresses by the hundreds of thousands and assign them almost anywhere. I believe, in the case of AOL, you can tell the difference between USA, Germany and someplace else, but that's it.

There are a number of projects to develop more of a geographic location identity to IP addresses, including one that I've found useful: http://geobytes.com

IP addresses are horrible identifiers for location. And Frappr is pretty cool. I haven't been there in a while though.
