Oh the lies of Microsoft and its well paid minions. I am surprised that people still fall for this -- except that Microsoft spends millions and millions to get this kind of information out.
Red Hat was found to have by far the most vulnerabilities, at 633, with 99 percent found in third-party components.
Windows had only 123 bugs reported, but 96 percent of those were found in the operating system itself.

Those statistics .....

It's not about the number of vulnerabilities. It's about the amount of time unpatched vulnerabilities exist. Some software might have had 200 vulnerabilities, if those were patched within 3 days on average and you compare that to some other software with 50 vulnerabilities, not patched for months (read, windows), make your choice for the 'safest' of the two.

Also, you have vulnerabilities and vulnerabilities. In the end, it's also about which get exploited and which not. User A using IE 6 with javascript enabled getting infected with spyware by surfing to website B is something else then user B having to do X, Y and manually aprove of Z to let his browser crash.
