Tough call...

On one hand I think MySQL AB were doing fine on their own but what the hell do I know it's not like I sit on the board of directors. :P

Sun has shown a great deal of dedication to the open source community with Java, so it's not like I'm terribly worried MySQL will slowly begin to switch gears towards a propritary model.

Sun is a well known, respected name...but then again so is Microsoft - if not by members of this community there are millions more who do.

Cheers :)

It helps sun to become bigger the question is is it nice sun to become large and larger?

Now sun has a DBMS Like Microsoft?
Do not forget it was an open source DBMS and I should be un happy for an open source program for its bad finish be sure sun did not that for the GOD.

To be honest, I don't think we'll see any changes. Most things like this are usually for another reason than wanting to change an existing product. More likely they want a solid database system under their little cloud, and be able to call on it anytime they need. Add to that, any requests they make for extra features can only be a good thing.

I can't see any reason why they would have any impact on current software etc.

I don't think Sun could change MySQL from FOSS to proprietary, even if they wanted to. The worst that could happen is that they could slow or halt upgrading MySQL. They have never tried to remove Java or Javascript from FOSS. And direct support has always been community based, and will continue to be. I don't see very much of a change to users.

What bothers me is that Sun develops Java and there is a lot of competition between Java and PHP for web developing. And PHP is tightly coupled with MySQL ...

But that point alone secures mysql's future, in a sense. Imagine what the net community would do if the tried to mess around with it like that in any way... Even a lot of Java users use MySQL.

I think this can only be good for MySQL, OSS and web development. Sun is, behind the scenes, a huge proponent of OSS. Many of their in house programs are being developed with using OSS. I know a few programmers (not web developers) that work at Sun that are using PHP and MySQL regularly as part of their programming.

With Sun throwing money like this at the product I can only imagine that this will get better and better for everyone involved. Will sun try to make money with this acquisition? Hell yes. They are in business for that reason. But I cannot imagine that Sun would do something like changing the complexion of the product. They may enhance it or even fork a higher priced version of it, but I cannot see them doing something would have a negative effect on the millions of MySQL users that are out there right now.

And if they do, there is always PostgreSQL. ;)
