So, I made a vow

Post by Chalks »

Yes, vow.

I've been spending waaay too much time on games, movies, and tv recently. So, I swore off those three things for the next week. Cold turkey, baby. A direct consequence of this is that my coding productivity will (and already has) go up dramatically, which is part of the reason I'm posting here. The other reason why I'm posting this, is to see if anyone wants to make bets about when I go insane.

I'm betting tomorrow at 11:32am. :dubious:

Anyone else have issues with this kind of thing? I need some support here, I'm already shaking uncontrollably.

Yep, I don't own a TV since I find myself watching commercials and crap I don't even care about. The fact I no longer have access to one means I spend a lot more time coding, or outdoors (or both :P).

I'm not really sure I'll bother getting a TV again... except maybe for watching DVDs, which isn't something you can really do all the time.

I think what you are doing is great. The problem is that the activities you mention eat up your life and in hindsight that huge amount of time was spent doing nothing. Talk about wasting your life...

Thumbs up, buddy!

I haven't owned a TV since ... err ... actually never in my adult life, and during about half of my teenage years.
I used to play games at home, but currently my home machines are (intentionally) not for that - only integrated video baby ;) Which doesn't mean that there aren't tons of good old games one can still play, but I've kinda skipped that part since a while. So this only leaves the gaming I do at work :)
Movies - never been a big fan of. I hate going to those temples of commercial crap they build these days, I can't stand the sound of popcorn being crunched in giggling jaws and if it weren't for the torrent busyness (I swear, officer, I only download GNU/Linux distros) I wouldn't miss watching any. Well, maybe except Futurama and Ghost in the Shell, but I still haven't gotten around watching the Bender movie, so you can tell how much I'm into movies ;)

I am an obsessive music listener though. The good part is that music is perfectly multitaskable. (If you've ever liked anything metal-related check 01011001, it's the new rock-opera of Ayreon, and it has this deliciously geeky title, eh)

So, crank up the volume, fire that PHP editor and enter the PHP matrix ;)

The interwebs has been my poison as of late. Even when I am not coding I will find things to surf for. Not sure why, but I have.

I just got cable back after a long hiatus without it. I am glad. I don't watch that much TV, but I make it count, spending most of the hour or so a day watching TV with my wife and kids.

I can say I've fallen into video games to much.

World of Warcraft mostly, I have 3 level 70s, and numerous other characters. I've probably quit playing the game a total of 5 times now.(Counting the time I purposely banned my account about 2 years ago now) Every time I just stop cold turkey. And eventually go back, because my other friends are still playing.
But now I believe I'm done. I have started to leave the house more, and hang out with friends. I've started to work out, and code a lot more. So far I'm pretty happy, its been about a month.

All I need now is a Girl in my life.

Pouty cute teenage boy being protected by a pouty HOT teenage girl robot!?!

I think being shut in during the long Canadian winter is causing Kieran to lose his grip on reality... ;)

/me gave up TV several years ago. Everything about it irritates me so it wasn't that hard to give up. I commend your efforts just the same though... TV is evil.

I watch the history and discovery channel with a 10 minute delay so I can fast forward through annoying commercials.
