<out of interest>
I tell you one thing that works although you need to get out on the streets. I used to drive past this rasta dude in Manchester on my way to work, and on the way home again. He always had a cardboard sign fastened to his back with string, sporting the name of his website and he'd just stand at the side of road while the cars drove by. I won't forget the name of his website though "sabirock.co.uk".
Clearly he was a determined musician out there getting his name on the streets. He did this for a long time though.

The only way to get your website known is to let people know about it. Blog about it, link to it from websites of a similar nature. If it's a specialized business for example, get an ad in a magazine which relates to it.
SitePoint also have a place to advertise and promote websites (in the market place area):

Pay-per-click advertising is a good way to target specific users. Google offer pay-per-click advertising, or again, if you're promoting a website which is very developer/software oriented you may want to try advertising on a website of similar nature.

Depending on what the site is about, you can also send press releases to other relavent sites that cover information similar to what your site provides. This can often give a quick boom in traffic, and help spread the word a little.

One thing to be aware of by the way... if you get lucky and you drive traffic to your site really quickly, make sure your hosting is prepared to deal with the load otherwise you'll just crash your site and nobody will see it at all. I'm thinking about Digg here... I've seen what getting on the front page of digg does to even high-spec servers

No, I mean if your site was an online image editing service for example, then you would send press releases to online photography and graphic design magazines to print a news story about your site. As Chris says though, be careful about how much traffic you drive to your site in one gohannnndy wrote:a little unclear for me you mean that depending on the category of the i should spend time in same type sites and leaving lik on them? or you mean adding the site in directories?
