External HD problem

Hey guys...
Thought I'd run a bit of an annoying problem I'm having by you and see if you have any suggestions on how I can fix it. I'm on Windows XP.
I have a 750 GB Seagate External Hard drive that is attached to my computer through a firewire port on the back of my PC. I leave it plugged in all the time.
The problem I am having is that when I shut down my PC and then start it back up, BIOS forgets the hard disk boot order of all my drives (I have 4 internal HDDs and the one external - only one internal has OS on it) and it doesn't pick the right drive to boot from and kinda just loops and loops looking for an OS. So what I've been doing is on power up, I simply go into BIOS, change the HDD boot order to it's correct order and hit 'F10' to save & exit... and everything boots up fine. It works, but EXTREMELY ANNOYING as you can guess.
Any idea why it's doing this? I am fairly sure it has to do with the external hard drive messing up the boot order. And sometimes the external drive shows up in the BIOS HDD boot order list, and sometimes it doesn't...which is also weird.
And just to note... this only happens if I shut my PC down and then boot it up again. If I do a "Reboot", this problem doesn't occur... so only after shut downs.
Any help would GREATLY be appreciated. Thanks.
