Microsoft Offers $44.6 Billion To Buy Yahoo
http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/01/wo ... ire-yahoo/
Interesting tidbit for February 1, Microsoft finally taking advantage of Yahoo's plunging share price to initiate a takeover bid. They're paying a hefty premium (the market will possibly narrow that a lot).
Given Yahoo's history with PHP, I'd be curious what happens to PHP poster example for highly scaled enterprise usage. Not to mention I use Yahoo's email service, Upcoming, Flickr, Delicious, ...

haha, say goodbye to your PHP poster example. Soon to replaced by .net and tagged by FrontpageMaugrim_The_Reaper wrote:Given Yahoo's history with PHP, I'd be curious what happens to PHP poster example for highly scaled enterprise usage. And say goodbye to the looks of yahoo mail, soon to be replaced by some nice Microsoft msn-ish design ..
Are there any rules concerning such a buy? I mean, here in Europe the anti-cartel policy is fairly strong. Not sure about the US.

I'm surprised Yahoo still exists. I think I've maybe used their service 3 times in my life.

In the US I think it's called "anti-trust". Yes, they do have legislation like that. A purchase that significant (especially involving Microsoft) would have to go through their FCC (not sure what it stands for) to make sure it doesn't monopolize a market.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

I don't see how it could break any anti-trust issues. I mean together they'd control what, about 30% of the market while google would still receive about 60%.
It's a good move to play catch up, but it's definitely far from monopolizing.

Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

I don't see how Yahoo being acquired by MS should make that services worse. After all, they were independent companies before Y! acquired them (Delicious and Flickr for sure).Maugrim_The_Reaper wrote:Not to mention I use Yahoo's email service, Upcoming, Flickr, Delicious, ...

It may not make them worse. What I can say out of personal preference is that I certainly won't use them. Just like I avoid things made in China when possible, I avoid using Microsoft products when possible. I won't lose any sleep over discontinuing use of the services, and I'll encourage others to do the same.

Exactly my position too... Bell Sympatico decided to 'partner' with Microsoft for their email services. No choice for the users (obviously) and now our email accounts are essentially hotmail accounts with pop access, I don't think MS should have access to my ISP email...
I've never used the email provided by them due to that fact and (not that I really use them now) I'll certainly avoid Y! like the plague if they decide to sell out to MS.
It boils down to not being able to trust Microsoft, their track record speaks for itself...

I avoid them already (except del.icio.us, but I started using it before they became a part of Y!). Just a personal preference, I guess.I'll certainly avoid Y! like the plague if they decide to sell out to MS.

Yeah. Saw it in the paper.
Who here uses Yahoo search?
I'll make a poll..
I don't remember last using yahoo in any way. We even use WeatherBug for weather.
You go, google!
I just hope I won't live to see the day when Microsoft sticks it's greasy hand into it.

Yahoo.. powered by Google.
The only outcomes I see with this..
1) Yahoo mail and Hotmail/MSN mail/Windows Live mail will merge.
2) Yahoo will stop using PHP.
3) Yahoo search will be MSN Live Search powered (and die.)
4) MS Waste $44.6billion.
Yahoo are sacking 1,800 staff this week.

SEC = Securities and Exchange Commission. FCC = Federal Communications Commission, not involved with antitrust. But that's okay, I wouldn't expect a Canuk to know.pickle wrote:In the US I think it's called "anti-trust". Yes, they do have legislation like that.
