new job opportunity, should I take it?

Post by yacahuma »

Hello,

I was just offer a job working with the architecture and implementation of IPTV and all the stuff around it like QOS, billing, etc.
The job is with Java, EJBs, web services. I really hate Java and will miss the love of my live, PHP. On the other side, there is not getting around it but JAVA jobs are everywhere and php jobs are not. It also pays a bit more of what I am making.

Suggestions or comments anyone.

I think for me it is not the language I am working in, it is the people I am working with and the software I am working on...

I think for too long I worried about the language. On this job I will be doing a lot of interesting things.

Thank you

More importantly, what are the people and culture like. Is there a good vibe to the place. Do they truly delegate and empower their employees? Do they both value employee input and clearly communicate goals? Do they use and value best practices?

I worked at a place for a while where everyone sat in one big room all day without ever speaking a word to each other. It was like pulling teeth to get a good morning out of anyone. There was a little radio at the end of the room they would turn on. It drove me insane. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I would echo those who downplay the importance of the programming language. The art is programming and the workplace is the environment; language is merely the tool.

thanks everyone for their input.

I have worked in places where people dont talk to each other. I definetively agree with astion. I really dont know if the new place will be like that. At my current job, my main worry is stagnation. All I do is php with oracle CRUD, and store procedures. Is fun but I will not be able to compete when I get out(I think).
