That _sounds_ great. Unfortunately IE has such a long history of poor standards compliance that I'll believe it when I see it. [/cynicism]
I can't wait for the most standards compliant IE ever! [/optimism]
I want a cookie. [/offtopic]

Read it as well this morning. Great news I think. Maybe, maybe in the future we will be able to build one site and have no needs for hacks or version targeting anymore.

Yes, very good news. Their original decision that IE would forever default to IE7 caused an uproar among those who care about such things. It would have stuck web developers with having to specify which browser version to target.

MS has bitten me in the add entirely too many times to believe them now.
When I see it, I'll believe it. Until then I will continue to hate it.

HOLY CRAP.
Install IE 8 beta!!!
That was _fast_.
Edit: I think I'm in shock.... no browser updates for 5 years? More? Then WHAM BAM, IE 7 then IE 8!

as i said before in a previous thread, really does not matter, just one more browser to support and hack around.
Considering IE6 is now around 7/8 years old and still has the vast majority of market share, it really makes no difference at all, it wont change what us developers have to ensure compatability for.
Id say your looking at a minimium of at least 3/4 years before we need to stop worrying about it and even then id guess it would still have a half-decent market share.
How i wish there was only one browser, even if it was IE6

How you wish Microsoft hadn't messed up Vista so at least IE7 might one day overtake IE6... I think our bright sunny future is still years away - at the very least until SP1 for the next Windows after Vista is released

Just tried a download. Apparently it will only work on Vista as the OS. Sorry XP users.
I guess if you are a developer and you want to test your work in IE8, you have to have Vista. Awesome. Thanks Microsoft.

I've already told my one remaining client that if they want assured performance past IE6 that they need to change programmers.
I'm hoping they do, since I'm supposed to be retired.

I wonder what our world would be like if all developers did not support older browsers, and forced the client to upgrade to the ones us developers choose to support?
Either that's unrealistic or not smart in another way?

Would you close firefox and view someone's website in Opera just because that's what their developer considered correct?

I, for one, will not visit a site that doesn't work in FF/Safari. Unfortunately there have been a few sites (Wells Fargo Bacnk for one) that you can literally not do anything unless it with IE (or Netscape Navigator - go figure).
