I just bought a 16GB iPod touch. Not taken it out of its box yet, but I'm about to do so and then set about installing Apache + PHP 5.2.3 on it :) Meh, being a nerd is kool.

PS: Anyone else already done this?

You can do that?!

If anyone can verify this it may be time to upgrade from my shuffle........

PHP, Python and Ruby all run on the iPhone if you Jailbreak it. You can even remote access to it (over SSH). It's not straightforward to keep up-to-date with the firmware and maintain a jailbroken touch though. I can't really go into it too much since it's not really legal but it's common enough knowledge that everyone does it with iPhone/iPod touch (ya know... the TIFF exploit thingy).

Yeah i have heard about it just never used it.

I did try and crack my nano a year or so ago (so you can play doom, run homebrew etc), but i found that to be overly complicated and i never did get it working, although i wasnt really bothered by it, i only spent a few hours doing it, 1 formatted nano later i gave up, i would be bothered however if i was unable to get this working as this is really the only reason i will upgrade from my shuffle (due to pocket / space constraints :D ), and the fact that imho iPods really aint that good (i have this 1000x better let me tell you, £250 when i got it but well worth it)

Is it really simple, i do i have to mess about with crappy software?

I got the same size touch for my girlfriend for her bday in January (sigh... just before the $20 'software update' ) and I am just blown away by it's usefulness.. Assuming a decent wifi connection, there's really nothing you can't do with it... Case in point, I was on my way out of town and had forgotten to transfer some money into my chequing account. I was stopped about 1 block away from my house when I remembered so I whip out the touch, connect to my network and use safari to log in to my banking site and 'save the day' so to speak ;)

I've wanted to jailbreak it since the day I got it, but at $450, I'll wait for a year until it's out of warranty... :)

Ok, to be honest I'm having trouble. I can downgrade from 1.1.4 and jailbreak that, but going to 1.1.2 from there just crashes my touch and I have to restore. Apparently apple changed something with the newer 16GB ones and they still haven't been successfully jailbroken. Ack.

I just restored it to 1.1.4 with the $20 software update on it and very little music since I'll keep trying and I can't be bothered to wipe out a large music collection right now.

I've heard that it works better when the 1.1.2 jailbreak tool (written in Java) is run from a windows PC rather than a Mac so I'll find one at work today and see what happens.

EDIT | I'm not sure they can really void your warranty if you do flash it with the original firmware again before taking it in for repair.

Very true... however if something were to happen, my girlfriend would be... um... less than pleased. We know that it's not that big of a problem, but tell that to a technophobe :)

While I don't have an iPod touch, I can certainly say that having something like that would be neat. Although what would be even neater would be a command line client on the iPod itself...

The iPod touch has command line apps available. It runs BSD. Admittedly, it's more of a gimmick and not very practical since the touch screen keypad is really only good for spoken words and not for syntax.

I have the "Installer" app on my iPhone, it acts a lot like aptitude. I have php, ruby and apache running, all of which update as new versions become available. It's dead easy!

So, Apple today released their iPhone/iPod touch SDK. This means Jailbreaking is no longer needed, although apps must first be signed by Apple for your iPod to allow them to be installed (at a cost of $99 US to the developer).

Ok Kieran, spill it. How did you get all that crap onto your iPod?

The future is looking very good with the SDK and upcoming new software for the iPods and iPhones. With push email, push cal and push contacts and all new software developed they will become full pda's, but then with a usable interface.

Zibri got around the issues I was having by the way. I now have PHP 5.2.3 on my touch :)

I installed Cydia too (Debian's Apt for iPhone/iTouch) but it seems to grind my touch to a halt so I'll probably get rid of it for now.

EDIT | There's no way I'm unistalling Cydia, I'm just never gonna open that damn synaptic-style APT cos the UI is slow. The apt-get from a terminal window works a treat :)
