Restore from what? It would help if we knew what happened to it first since there are differing approaches based on circumstances. Don't build your hopes up though, hard drives aren't the most robust pieces of hardware once they break.

The hard drive does show up, but as RAW instead of FAT and then Windows wants to reformat the disk, but I don't want to

It sounds like the file allocation table has been corrupted. There are Windows applications that can recover it, but they cost a huge amount of money.
One thing that might work is booting from a Linux LiveCD and seeing if Linux can mount the drive, or if there's a free file recovery tool on Linux that can.

I have used a couple programs that detect data in the absence of fat. Give me some time to figure what they were (as I lost them to a hard drive crash).
In the mean time don't write to those disks!

Well I can't remember nor find the programs however...
Try dcfldd Windows binary...
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/dcfl ... p?download
Their page is here...
http://dcfldd.sourceforge.net/
dcfldd is open source so I can only presume it's free. I have not used it, just looking stuff up for you. Good luck!

yeah, i haven't tried anything yet on the disk, and it's unplugged unless i'm trying something...
thanks for the info. i'll try it later...
but just making sure running any program won't affect the hard drive (as long as it doesn't write to the disk)
