Looks like there's more than a few people unimpressed with Mozilla Pheonix's new name:

Why can't they all just play nicely with their Open Source neighbours?

I don't think firebird is the best choice and the response of the chief wrangler is a bit arrogant. On the other hand some of the posts and mails are way too rude.
Developing/Using open source software doesn't make you a better person automatically

I think the Mozilla Firebird name is fine. Seriously, the Firebird SQL project didn't ask permission from all the other Open source projects using Firebird as a name, and they get all upset when Phoenix changes its name.
They talk about not being contacted by Mozilla, and yet they didn't contact any other project using the name to see if they could use the name. Give me a break. Not only were their tactics predatory (suggesting people mass email the developer's and the forums), but they contend this is "a slap in the face to the entire open source community."
Right. Indeed, one's a browser, and one's a database project. Their arguments are infintile, and immature. In fact, the fact that Phoenix changed it's name has brought increased vitistors to their site and project, and has increased it's popularity before this hole "scandle".
I for one find this whole "<span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> contest" to be completely stupid. If the Firebird database people want to keep this up, they obviously aren't working on simply creating a good project.
I work on another open source project, known as Eclipse, the Extensible Class Library for PHP Software Engineers. This name shares the name of another open source project. Does that really matter? No! It's moronic for me to care what another open source projects names itself. I just work on creating a good, solid set of code, that's all that matters. I am not going to <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> and whine about people using the name, or sharing the name.
I would see a problem if MySQL switched to name itself Firebird, but these are two different applications.
As far as I am concerned. The Firebird database project lost my respect before it even gained it. They are obviously NOT open source if they are acting like they own some imaginary trademark on the FIrebird name.
'Nuff said.
