Anti-Malware Programs.

I never really use them, except for Ad-Aware (free version), because I never really get malware. But I have this "Rouge Anti-Spyware" program on my machine now and I ran Ad-Aware, which I trusted to be the best free program, and it didn't remove it.

How do you usually deal with malware, viruses, spyware, whatever? Which is the best program that takes care of everything, except firewalls because firewall just has those annoying pop-ups saying "Would you like this to happen?" and stuff; and plus I don't really want firewalls because I here that they can make a computer runs slow.

I'm considering the best even if it cost money... Maybe.

Symantec sucks I here. I think something like TrendMicro would be good but I don't know.

PS: I could maybe figure a way to manually remove this program from my computer but I don't know if it might of installed other things.

Thanks for reading.

Honestly ... Linux. And I am not being glib. There is not much (except games) that you cannot do the same or better on a Linux desktop at this point in my opinion. I still have a laptop with Vista, but it is a pain to keep up with every thing wrong in the Windows world. My Linux desktops are just easier for me to deal with.

spybot and adaware usually do the job for me. I only use adaware as a last resort. And these antispyware programs are not replacements for good antivirus programs running (I use NOD32).

As far as I know you have to run multiple programs to be sure you can detect most. I think most programs only detect 25%-60% of all malware
http://winnow.oitc.com/malewarestats.php

Then, when the programs run you have to understand the cryptic messages you get. And you have to find out if a detected malware is really malware or just a false-positive. that means searching through huge forums dedicated solely to dealing with PC malware... After you find a threat you have to install and run other little programs to see if and how your registries are effected, etc etc

Tried this process a few weeks ago for my old XP desktop using NOD32, but gave up after a few hours. I remembered why I ditched windows.

I've also had McAfee in the past, but later I found out it hardly detects anything. And you have to know that after installing that program you have to deal with a constant stream of pop ups telling about what it's doing ("your virus db is updated". Yeah sure so what) and it's impossible to remove the program.

Linux = console which means less productivity so I can't recommend it. Hopefully Linux developers will fix things like no RPM/binaries (whatever) installers when software is released such as Firefox 2 which I tried to install half a year after it's release without success. I'm not a Linux guru and I don't want to be.

Until that day happens I'm going to give you some strange but helpful advice: IE...

It's a video mostly for removing viruses though you can use these scanners for spyware too. Windows might break down every now and then but at least it won't turn your hard drive in to partition cheese, force you to use virtual memory, and install software without having to bother with DOS: productivity. Ca-mon Linux, you guys are more capable then that! :|
