So ole's moving to the Great White North

Post by Kieran Huggins »

in fact, he'll be on the plane in just a few hours! How cool is that?

I'm thinking that next summer we should do a cross-continent road trip from SoCal to Toronto and see if we can meet up with some of you 'mericans.. I've been meaning to return Everah's Mocha to him, though it'll probably be cold by then.

Which makes me wonder, have any of you guys actually met one another in person? It might be fun to do a big, general PHPDN meet-up when we're passing through!

Here's hoping ole's VISA goes smoothly on the morrow (fingers crossed)!

I was actually wondering if anyone has met anyone else here the other day.

My answer is no. Would love to though.

Here are onion2k and JayBird discussing the finer points of PHP with an unidentified young programmer at their Viking Centre meetup. ;)

Oh dear. I can't visit the Viking Centre now. A website that uses deeply nested tables made with Dreamweaver? I couldn't walk around that place without feeling ... dirty.

Come to American, come to my place. We'll BBQ, drink and make all sorts of merriment.

The closest I have come to meeting anyone from here is almost attending a meetup put on by Califdon. He lives just a few miles from where I live. I was unable to make it.

Ninja live a few hours away, arborint lives a few more hours away than Ninja in the opposite direction.

But I would love a meetup with some of my PHPDN cronies. That would be awesome.

Would certainly be fun.

The thing is, when on devnetwork we only talk php. So even though I might have had many, many "conversations" with people here, the fact is I don't know anybody for real. Maybe one or two persons. The only thing I know about most is a username. And that person A is good with databases and person B good with jQuery. That's it. Often I don't even know a real name, an age, or even in what place someone lives. It's the same the other way around. So if I would stop posting today, nobody would really miss me, because I was only one of the many "anonymous" users with username "X".

That's a strange idea. To feel like you're part of a community but at the same time it's all quite anonymous. Has it's advantages of course, but still.

p.s. not having a signature or avatar even after 1900 posts doesn't help much either..

I've spoken over a webcam to Burrito before (where the hell is he anyway? :P). Ninja once nearly planned to come to Manchester once (when I was living there). My ex-boss is a member on these forums though he never really drops by.

I have to admit, I'm not very good at going to social PHP gathering or any of the web standards meetups. Although I'm interested in the subject area, I'm just not *that* geeky that I feel comfortable talking shop all night. My social nights out are considerably... errr... well yeah, let's not go there :P

I'd still like to meet up with some devnetters and NOT just talk about PHP, servers, who's got the biggest projects yadda yadda... :)

Don't worry, we have already heard all the stories about that party guy down under. That's you isn't it? ;)

An intermediate step for me would be having some sort of separate place, preferably non-public or at least non-archive able, were we can talk about other stuff then programming. For example, I'd be interested in talking politics or someone else's hobby's. But having those subjects right here would quickly lead to many problems. There are good reasons (strict moderation and rules) that this place stays nice and friendly.

I know several people who have met each other via forums and have become very good friends in real life. Maybe having that one common interest increases the chances of getting along well. One drawback of getting to know people online is that you spend a lot more money on airplane tickets, flying all over the place. But well, having a few places to stay instead of expensive hotels makes up for that a bit.
