I think you missed:

My point was to not let money dictate which job you want to take. It may, however, dictate which one you need to take. Don't go for a 40K job that you'll be miserable at when a $30K job will be much more enjoyable & still let you have a comfortable life (not sure what the actual numbers should be - but hopefully you get the point).
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

I gotcha. I can't find reference to the law (at least I think it's a law) that says X will always expand to fill Y, so even at $100k a person will say they don't make enough to live comfortably. When I got my better job, I moved to an expensive area and got a better apartment and ended up in the same situation. So I know that if I got a 6 figure salary, I would fill up the difference with stuff I don't need. Ideally, I would like to get a nice high 5 figure salary in Chicago so my girl can continue her career as well. So I'll hang out for another year or so and if things don't improve, I'll make the move. Worst that can happen is I hate it and I find something else.

Basically I just needed superficial confirmation that I have the skills to ask for the salary I want. If I had gone on an interview and the interviewer laughed in my face, I would have given up right then and there. But now, that may still happen, but I know I can just try somewhere else.

As volomike put it, I have some more things I need to learn and I'm willing to do so, I just want to make sure I'm not doing an injustice to myself (read: career) by staying at a lower position just because.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I understand that it's completely my decision but I really appreciate all your comments and helpful insights. I just hope this thread is helpful, for someone else doubting their self-worth, to go out and get what they deserve.
