Firefox 3 Download Day --> Download *Time*

Post by JAB Creations »

Seems Firefox 3 won't be released until 10AM Pacific Standard Time. To help reduce confusion since we have a lot of good folks here from all around the world I've attempted to make a little time guide. For me it's 10:15am so just add three time zones (three hours) and you've got the time from the thread post.
11am Rookies
None Pacific
1pm Central
2pm Eastern
3pm Atlantic
4pm Greenland/Brazil
5pm Mid-Atlantic
6pm Cape Verde Is.
7pm London
8pm Amsterdam/Berlin
9pm Athens
10pm Moscow
11pm Caucasus Standard Time
Midnight Islamabad
1am Astana
2am Bangkok
3am Beijing
4am Tokyo
5am Sydney
6am Solomon Islands
7am Marshall Islands
8am Hawaii
9am Alaska

Firefox 3 won't kick total butt IMHO (and I use it as my default browser). So here are a couple things to help smooth the transition...
My tutorial for restoring the Go Button as Mozilla has started to mimic Microsoft in GUI butchering...

Force installing extensions (addons) is relatively easy and I have a video on YouTube where if you skip to about five minutes in to the video I run through how to get most extensions to work. Keep in mind doing so won't neccesarily make the extensions work, just override their internal compatibility ceiling set by the extension author.

Lastly for any one else interested in CSS3 I have a before and after image on my CSS3 page of the single CSS3 improvement in Gecko 1.9 that I'm currently aware of which fixes a bug where background images in Gecko 1.8 and older would not be cropped at the border...

Oh NO! I've downloaded Firefox 3 and somehow it over wrote Firefox 2! I think I forgot to install it in another directory.

How can I get Firefox 2 back? What do you guys suggest I do, now that Firefox 3 is out. Is it good for testing purposes? I don't think firebug is finished for the Firefox 3?

Well you still have the same profile. So all you have to do is reinstall Firefox 2. Just install it to a different directory.

Then do what I do...set profiles per version of Firefox. My shortcuts look like this...
"C:\MEDIA\INTERNET\Mozilla Firefox 2.0\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager
"C:\MEDIA\INTERNET\Mozilla Firefox 3.0\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager

I'm pretty sure there is a way to have Firefox load a specific profile but I have been too lazy to figure out how to do that.

Once you reinstall Firefox 2 start it up with the shortcut modification (your path will most likely be different then mine) but just add -ProfileManager to the end. I actually keep full fledged backups of the profile directories so I can avoid the time of setting each profile up, dictionaries, menu trimming, extension settings, etc.

You can download older versions of Firefox here...
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=firefox

...or just search Google for "old version"

If you want to merely duplicate your current profile for Firefox three then you first need to create the profile in the profile manager. Then just copy the original profile's files and overwrite the new profile's files.

Let me know how it works out please. :)

Yea okay, well I'm going to have to search online for it. And then I'll follow JABs steps. ;)

EDIT: If anyone finds 2.0.0.14 let me know please. Also how do I know if the installer I'm downloading from a site other then mozilla.com doesn't contain a virus?

Miriga! Your a life saver! :D

I installed it under "Mozilla Firefox 2.0". Is it possible to run both version 3 and 2 at the same time, I can't seem to do that? Also every time I go from 2 to 3 or 3 to 2 I get a update thing pop up and ask me to update add-ons.

What were you saying about profiles? I didn't get it. :P

Thanks again.

Profiles for Firefox are exactly like users for Windows XP.

At the end of the shortcut add -noremote. However this creates problems when calling the browser such as when I receive email notifications from Yahoo. I usually don't have a need to run them side by side however. I merely run Mozilla Suite/SeaMonkey/Firefox for Gecko 1.7/1.8/1.9 comparisons.

-noremote? Do you mean anything? For example, -whatever and then -whatever 2.

"C:\MEDIA\INTERNET\Mozilla Firefox 2.0\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager -no-remote
"C:\MEDIA\INTERNET\Mozilla Firefox 3.0\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager -no-remote

You could technically run two copies of Firefox 3 with two different profiles. I'm crashing now so I hope this gets you up to speed until I wake up later and can answer more questions.

Just installed it. Looks good. Theme is a bit darker, but it feels a lot faster. That's a very good thing, as FF2 was getting very annoyingly sluggish, crashing all the time because I have like 30 tabs opened all the time, etc.

Amazes me how upgrading software can be so easy and painless. Download. Drag to application folder. Start. See how FF checks for updates for add-ons and installs them. Opens all 30 tabs I had opened 5 mins ago before upgrade, being logged in and everything.
