The DevNet Chat.

Post by JellyFish »

Some of you may have noticed the little banner in my sig and sometimes visited it.

Well what I've noticed is that people would go to the devnet chat and be all alone then leave. No one would know when someone else is online.

So today I'm proud to announce an update to the devnet chat, one that I've been longing to do for quite some time. I've updated my banner to display the number of users online at the minute! So next time you visit the chat room remember that you'll show up in this banner.

Now, I don't know if this is considered spamming or not. I don't see how this would be as it is dedicated to DevNetwork. If it it please let me know and I'll happily delete this post(Or you can delete it, however that works). :D

Also, whoever wants to become an official devnet chat user you can add this banner to your sig, if you please:

Code: Select all

[ url=http://devnetwork.awardspace.com/][ img]http://devnetwork.awardspace.com/banner-image.php[/img]
(Remember to remove spaces in from of 'url' and 'img')

Thank you DevNetwork for the greatness! :drunk:

Nice. I reckon it'll say 0 most of the time though.

Maybe we could organise a time each week where we all agree to hit the chatroom for some reason.

Why is there a big YouTube video there. Rather annoying,

how about instead of a web-based chat we have a devnet jabber server? Google Apps springs to mind, although there are plenty of decent XMPP servers we could run on the slice.

Come to think of it, I already have a bunch f devnetters on IM, so perhaps it's a moot point. Also, the amount of noobs bugging us by IM to write their code NOW could be extreme.

There's at least half a dozen of the more experienced members and mods on MSN. We try to keep that quiet though because while we like chatting we don't like getting pestered for instant solutions to PHP problems.

Not just videos, media. If you want to illustrate something with an image you can do that with the media player.

Erm..

Why not just make an IRC channel at FreeNode (the biggest software/tech/etc IRC network)? :]

You can use mIRC for Windows and Irssi for pretty much everything. There's an irssi for windows even, but I mostly use it on Linux/*bsd/SunOS.

Seems #phpdn was registered 6 years ago by "EvilWalrus" who's nick/username looks extremely farmiliar.. I guess someone could register #phpdevnet or something if no one could contact him. I think it'd actually be a bit better than a webchat. (:

I think the notion of a web chat is counterproductive to what we are trying to do here. A much smaller audience benefits from user contributions on a chat, whereas forums act as a search-able archive.

Yeah, they have the archive. But I doubt the chat/IRC channel would serve as much help, it'd probably just be the forum regulars getting together to talk about whatever. :p Just a "in real time" version of the General Discussion forum..

It thinks that's a fair enough summarization of it. Really all it is a Gerneral Discussion chat for DevNet, not meant to replace the forums(as Jcart said, the forum is much more appropriate, e.g. search-able information.).

But I wonder where Kieran's video is? O.o
