I am teaching a PHP/MySQL Online class this Fall

Post by gwjenkins »

The class is a college credit online offered thought Long Beach Community College in Long Beach California.

See the new item on right side of our main web site: http://cbis.lbcc.edu for more details, or email me. (gjenkins/at/lbcc.edu)

I've always wanted to teach PHP and MySQL to newbies. But then I think, hey, wait a minute, that means they become competitors, so I then I bail on the idea. I mean, there are already too many PHP devs out there, and many who shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If I were in India, it would be a different story.

Looks like a very useful course. Good luck with it. We'd love to have you drop in here at DevNet when you can spare the time, and either help with answering some of the questions or perhaps writing short tutorials that we could use as references.

So this is basically an advert...

Good luck anyway.. I do have a concern though. You advertise "Install and configure both PHP and MySQL.". This itself is very nebulous. On which OS ? Linux flavours and Windows installation all vary to some degree. No mention of security so I hope you cover some of that as well.

yes, I plan to start them with XAMP and then have them publish to a secure Linux server. Later in the course I will cover installation aspects and securing PHP and MySQL. I also plan to send them to sources on the internet that explain security steps for different OS's.

I had a look at the site and I'm not clear on the cost of this course? It would be good to clarify that.

The total price is $201 for those who live in California, and $810 for those who do not, but are US Citizens. This price is for the full 15 week class.

Seems interesting enough.. Though, just out of curiosity, why would the price ~$600 for "non-locals" or whatever you want to label them as? If they're out of state will they be online courses or something?

It has to do with the way California Community Colleges set their fees. Preference is given to California residents. I think it's common in most states.

Well then the people that are out of the area take the course online, or do they have to travel to the class (if they're just on the border of the other state or something similar)?

And really, every class I've taken at a college that's not for highschool/college credit was inside the college, I wouldn't sign myself up for an out-of-state class, or if I was looking at an online class it'd probably be one of the local NY universities or something.

It is an online class. No driving involved by anyone.

And the Property taxes of California residents pay for most of the cost of their education at community colleges, and the tuition are set by the state laws.
