GPL v. 3 different?

Post by alex.barylski »

I was under the impression that superficial changes or rebranding was allowed under (L)GPL or most open source licenses for that matter.

According to this thread on the sugar forums:

http://www.sugarcrm.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34855

Removal of powered by logo's and so forth are not allowed???

I thought the only thing protected by GPL was the source code -- in which case the copyright headers in source files.

I understand that vTier and a few others are actually rebranded knock offs of SurgarCRM so I figured SugarCRM wouldchange the license to something more restrictive after that.

Anyone familiar with GPL v 3 and care to tell me what I can and cannot rebrand in sugar CRM?

Using open source is so confusing for this very reason. Regardless of how many times I read a license or ask questions, there always seem to be someone would argues the implications and brings me right back to the drawing board.

I've googled about open source and Sugar and it seems their practices have upset a few in the open source community, particularly the president of OSI. The article I read left me feeling that he didn't feel Sugar actually met open source definition.
