My iPhone has a black hole

Post by malcolmboston »

i have an 8gb :( iPhone, the problem im having is this.....

In iTunes my drive space is broken down like this:

Audio: 2.54gb
Video: 692.9mb
Photos: 5.5mb
Other: 2.49gb
Free Space: 1.58gb

Now what i dont understand is what is using up the 'Other' 2.49gb, My iPhone is unlocked (Jailbroken) and i have a few custom app's but the only one taking up any significant space is a Snes emulator w/ roms but that only takes up around 40 - 50mb, im absolutely baffled what is using this 2.49gb and believe its got to be an error because i simply have not put anything on the iPhone of anywhere near that size.

Im not familiar with the OS X / iPhone directory structure and cannot find anything that could be causing this, i do not want to have to format my phone to correct this as its too much hassle, im wondering if this is a known issue (possibly database error??) with the new generation of iPhones or iPod Touchs, a quick search revealed nothing.

Cheers, Mal

Perhaps it's an overbloated OS? Heh or better yet, one of the top 10 stupidest ideas of all time: a pagefile! Nothing like cheaping out of building things right just to save a few lousy bucks. Though I can't imagine a mobile OS taking up 2+ GB of space. It could also be an emergency fresh copy of the mobile OS that is restored over the one you use maybe? Doesn't make that much sense though.

i gave up in the end and restored, gotta give credit to apple's backup option in iTunes, works great.

I am not sure what it was but if it comes back again i wont be happy

The OS won't be part of the advertised 8 GB space, unlike computers and laptops.

If an iPod or iPhone says 8, 16, or 32 GB of space, it should have that much available for usage.

And as I always say... when it doubt, back up and re-install/restore.

it doesnt have 8gb of space, it has a little over 7gb of actual usable space, its the same with all these hard-drive manufacturers, its dummed down for your average consumer and the actual space your getting is much less when your hitting the high numbers, which i think should be outlawed or even better, if it says 8gb, that is the actual size usable even if the device has to have 9gb to accomodate it [/rant]

Right now my iPhone is showing as using 229mb of 'Unknown' type, id imagine this is the norm and probably accounts for the base OS and the database of contents.

Now all im waiting for is a simple windows app to jailbreak 2.0 with a click of a button........
