Million dollar question

Post by shiznatix »

So, it being a Saturday with my vacation just starting, I have found myself with an awful hangover. Now, the million dollar question, what is your hangover cure? I usually find myself with a large amount of greesy, fatty, unhealthy food. What about you?

Go buy a blender, frozen white grape juice and a bag of frozen fruit. Make the white grape juice as usual. Put one to two cups of frozen fruit (peaches, grapes, melon, strawberries, etc) into the blender and then add white grape juice until the fruit has about 1 or 2 inches of juice over it. Blend it up into a nice pink smooth mixture. Drink that and you'll me amazed how quickly you will feel better.

Your body needs to be rehydrated so drink a lot of water. Apparently taking an Aspirin the night before works really well.

Greasy, fatty foods are not the answer...I don't think there is any merit to that myth or misconception. Eating fatty foods the day after will not soak up the alcohol as it's already been processed by your body, made you pee and you are now dehydrated. Eating greasy, fatty foods will probably result in higher blood pressure which is not going to help your body recover from a hang over.

and leads to ulcers. I would not recommend that.

As for a remedy, plenty of water the next morning fixes me up in no time. Drinking plenty of water the day/night before also helps.

I suspect that a fruit smoothie as mentioned above would indeed work particularly well.

Hydration is a big thing, and fruit contains lots of water as well as sugars to get you going. Also, if b**r is involved, your body is likely full of carbs, which makes eating bread and other carb heavy foods somewhat more difficult. Good Chinese food may also work well. My omlettes I make for friends also always disappear very quickly.

I also caution strongly against Aspirin or other blood thinners, since alcohol is a blood thinner itself, and also acidic (ph of about 5.5). Aspirin increases acidity in blood, which could get dangerous along with the other chemicals.

I never drank a drop of alcohol in my life nor will I ever...so I don't need a cure. The best way to stop a habit is to never start it to begin with.

I speak from vicarious experience. (I learn from my friends.)

I quite agree. Avoid the stuff, particularly in large amounts.

Seriously, though, Cracklin' Oat Flakes with Ecstasy jokes aside, drugs and alcohol are uncool unless you've got third-stage cancer. At that point, smoke all the dope you want -- just don't drive after doing it. And you sure don't need to be writing PHP software right after waking up with a hangover.

I've even given up soda pop finally. Before you think that's funny, read on. It wasn't funny. After turning 40 last year, I somehow, through oddball genetics, got a dose of gout of all things. It burned my ankle up in my right foot, and then traveled very painfully up my leg and into my left foot. People thought I was nuts because here I was fairly young, and I came into work limping on one foot for two days, and then limping on another foot the next couple days. I had to stop all fizzy drinks completely. This was hard because, while you might be addicted to nicotine or alcohol or serious stuff, I was addicted to the taste of Pepsi and Coke. I would break out in a cold sweat just thinking about it. I still have trouble when I see the stuff, just like a person on cocaine. I was up to 3 two-liter bottles a day, all by myself. It was the only thing I drank -- not even coffee, water, or anything else. It was all Coke. I had been drinking large glasses of Coke ever since I was five years old when I found it at my grandma's house back in the 70's. My digestive organs were probably all eat up and I had to do something to fix this.

I cured the gout (sort of). The doctor said that the gout drugs are expensive, don't work perfectly, and have lots of side effects. So, he said to switch to pure water for two months, but that didn't help. That's when I found that one tablespoon of baking soda mixed thoroughly in a tall glass of water, taking 3 times a day, for two months, does the trick. It's sort of like drinking salt water, so you have to chase it with tea or something else -- just not Coke. And so now I only drink CranGrape juice, tea, and water -- and I still do my baking soda water every other day.
