Remember the topic titled "Hosting nightmares"? (I found it in a search, but I don't know how to link to it.) It had to do with an explosion problem at The Planet and sites being down for days.

I host a site for a client on BlueFur (formerly Monster) which is a reseller for The Planet. My client called this morning to tell me that their site is down and has been since last night. So I go to BlueFur's HelpDesk and check the server status display. Lots of green dots, but the HTTP dot for my server is red. Their prompt reply to my query says that they have no time frame for the server being back up. It also says they appreciate my patience, which is a somewhat unwarranted assumption.

I check back to the server status display a little later. Oops, half a dozen red dots. This is not good. Later yet there is just the one. Then there are six or seven, but different ones. Still no time frame on when mine will be back up.

Oh, boy.

See if you can get SSH access to the server, then you could just reactivate the services. I had the same problem, once I had ssh access I was able to solve the problem in a few mins.

I don't think I would know what to do with SSH access if I had it.
But my fears seem not to have been realized, as the site came back up a little after noon and seems to be okay now.

Never host a site from a reseller that sells servers that are in a building that explodes, I always say. ;)

Glad you got it all back together. I know how frustrating it is having things not work the way they are supposed to (*cough* devnet *cough*).

Sounds to me that spending money on a provider that actually knows how to do the job is worth it. Page downtime, depending on your type of site, can be costly. If stuff is sold, you will loose income, and in any case, visitors could easily be scared away from a site that disappears from time to time.

Web hosting is not expensive, find someone who knows how to do the job.
