Help- new LCD screen, old laptop

Hi everyone.
Firstly I apologize if I am in completely the wrong forum- but I stumbled across this one and thought I'd give it a shot. I am having trouble getting a new 22 inch HP w2207h monitor to work with my laptop.
I have an ACER aspire 5000 laptop, which has a SiS M760GX graphix card. The new monitor is a HP widescreen LCD monitor, which has an optimal resolution of 1680 x 1050. Unfortunately when I set windows resolution to this number, it does not fit on the screen; i.e. I have to scroll over to the left and right to see everything. If, however I choose 1680 x 1200, then the icons are probably a little too small, but everything fits on the screen nicely... its just the monitor says that it can't recognise the input and after 30 seconds goes to sleep. Annoying!
I've tried HP support and I've tried downloading new drivers for my graphic card.. to no avail.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Kai
