P5q motherboard and intel core 2 duo

Post by Obadiah »

i purchased both of these and when i took the processor out the box it had no pins...so where its supposed to clamp down to the motherboard it has resistance...i made sure the arrow was lined up correctly and cdw says that the pq5 motherboard is supposed to be compatible with the intel core2 duo...what could be the problem?

Asus? Whoa, major mistake there. I purchased a $300 motherboard from them through Newegg and the board was bad. I RMAed it twice and they sent me used replacements for a new $300 board. Simply put they don't stand by their products and Gigabyte busted them hard earlier this year for lying about a few of their specs. I'm actually now considering buying Newegg's extended warranty for all motherboards I purchase in the future though I will never purchase an Asus product ever again.

Now that you have been warned about Asus...

Did you bother reading the manual? I just installed a socket 775 Celeron and it wasn't really that hard though it wasn't exactly too straight forward. The CPU mount's looped handle needs to be pulled outwards (to the left of the socket and a little bit down to clear the non-moving part of the mount) before you can pull the retention upwards. That will open the CPU mount and let you put the CPU in. You obviously know enough to line the pins up correctly. Just repeat the opening steps backwards and ensure that the CPU isn't sitting loosely. Install the heatsink (the Celeron my client ordered had one hell of a loud fan!) and make sure it too is firmly installed on the board. Make sure you read the manual first if you're not familiar with the setup.

Good luck!

JAB Creations warned me about Asus on Twitter - it's almost embarrasing to admit that the Asus board I ended up buying has recently seen me seriously considering taking a hammer to it, just so I could alleviate some frustration ;), and refund be damned. I finally got things working using an unofficial BIOS and some careful tweaking of voltages (the damn board overvolts everything by 0.06v, undervolts everything else like the frickin' Northbridge, and has sweet f* all default compatibility with DDR3 RAM).

LGA 775 CPUs don't have pins - weird I know esp. if, like me, you were using Athlons until now, but it just means you have to get used to the mounting plate that needs to be locked over the CPU. This unfortunately makes the CPU appear not to be seated even though it is - the plate cover does press a lot of pressure on the CPU (but it's designed to take that). Presumably the chip has the usual notched corner and guiding notches to prevent mis-installation? It's probably also a stupid question, but you did remove the CPU cover and socket inserts? There shouldn't be any plastic protective elements on the socket or CPU.

Also do yourself a favour and get a better heatsink - the included one is pretty crap on any CPU. There are lots of excellent (and cheap-ish) heatsinks with multiple heatpipes out there that do a lot better with far less noise. If you can get a heatsink that accepts a 120mm fan then all the better. Bigger fans move more air with less voltage and far fewer RPMs which keeps them quieter. Just make sure the fan is pushing air towards the exhaust ports on the case - AMD processors have an annoying angle which often prevents this but no excuse with an Intel MB.

I have my Asus board now running solid, but it was such an annoyance to manually correct for an expensive board than I'll be avoiding them in the future. With SLI coming to the Intel X chipsets I can even avoid nForce chipsets...

I got your post too late guys and to my everlasting shame.....i have no serious beef with it...other than 2 very annoying cant recognize hardware popups that appear when i restart or log in to my PC...its really really friggin annoying!
