Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates

Post by josh »

Jerry Seinfeld convinces Bill Gates to try and connect with everyday people the old fashioned way.

I think I have figured out why these ads are trying to depict Gates and Seinfeld this way. They're trying to show how Microsoft is basically saying: Okay, we know we're bad and haven't connected enough with you. We're going to change our ways. Forget about Vista. We'll make it better when you see our new stuff.

I bet you anything that's how these ads are going to go in the next installment. I mean, right now, the ads are baffling and counter-productive to Microsoft, so there has to be a reason. We know Microsoft just poured millions into a new ad campaign. So this is the only conclusion I've come up with -- that it's a gimmick to basically say that M$ is "hearing you" and will make changes soon.

Trouble is -- it's too late. I've moved on to Ubuntu and am never going back. The only reason I have Windows is because I have to test with their lousy IE browser. I test on IE6 and IE7 still, and I boot Virtualbox VMs to load XP and Windows 2008 Server for my testing.

In fact, if it ever came down to a day where I felt compelled to go back to Windows, I'd probably tack hard-right and get a Mac.

There's usually multiple layers of psychology involved whenever big companies do something like that, sometimes they blatantly use one psychological technique, to distract your cognition so they can apply another technique. Microsoft aside, I'm sure Bill Gates has quite a rich personality but of course the commercials gonna be scripted and "fake" hah

Guys, they dumped Seinfeld and now the videos are even more bizarre and pathetic:

Microsoft Windows - "I'm a PC"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkZdkHylJ3w

So basically they're trying to say that Windows has gotten a bad rap, and that lots of people still claim to use it to actually get work done, rather than goof off.

Yeah, and how do I disconnect from a wireless carrier and connect to another one on Windows Vista? How many clicks is that? Come again? Or how many clicks do I need to revert my settings as much as possible to look more like Windows XP (without new theme)?

You see, here's why Microsoft thinks they even have a selling point. They think because they worked with vendors for proprietary formats, drivers, and other vendor lock-in, their way is the only way to go or otherwise you're smurfed and just wasting your time. Yeah, as long as Microsoft keeps buying up the competition, competing ruthlessly against it to kill it, and cutting backroom deals so it can shut out the competition ruthlessly while all the while seeming friendly -- they'll still think they have a selling point.

Look. I refuse to purchase anything from a company that had a CEO commit a felony (a perjury in this case) and get away with it:

Or was run by a raving lunatic like this:

It is funny how Microsoft is being so defensive and reacting to an Apple commercial. It only displays Microsoft as being afraid of this tiny competitor (24 billion revenue for Apple compared to 60.000 for Microsoft according to wikipedia?)

I'm no marketing guy, but wouldn't it be wiser to just play to your own strengths instead of this?

Noting I haven't seen the ads, the general feeling I get is one of MS reacting to Apple and coming up with ads which aren't funny and seem to confuse people. Maybe there is a grand plan but so far it doesn't seem to be working. Then again, I'm a geek - the non-geeks who far outnumber the geeks might think different ;).

I smurf hate Windows...I bought a Laptop the last weekend..I've had to reinstall it already because of some driver smurf up.

I wish GNU/Linux would mature and mainstream developers (Adobe) would write software for it.

Window's CLI shell is a joke too.

Installing SVN on Windows takes about 20 minutes after adding all the PATHs and stuff.

Debian with aptitude

sudo apt-get install svn

I'm not a fanboy on any side..I'm just getting sick to smurf of windows.

I use a mac at work and it does come with most development tools installed and configured out of the box: ssh, svn, php, ruby on rails, apache2. Never had any driver problems because it's a closed system. The command line is the same as Linux/Unix systems (ie it can actually do something).

Nearly ever developer I know has switched to mac now.

Never had any spyware on it, looks quite nice...sure you pay a premium but this laptop experience has wasted about 5 hours of smurf around..5 hours I could have spent working and earning money.

Wow..I'm venting sorry.

Windows is ok, mac is ok, Linux is ok.

Give me Commodore BASIC
