PHP or The Java World Of Fun?

I started working with/learning Java, Beans, servlets about a year ago, and have gone thru a significant learning curve. I'm not an expert, but sort of intermediate level I guess.

I picked up with PHP a few months ago and am learning it rather quickly. I'm using Apache with PHP as a module and MySQL.

Here's the question: should I concentrate on the PHP world, or Java world, or get strong in BOTH??

I am also taking a college course in XML.

I'm not currently employed as a programmer, following 2 layoffs in 4 years  as a VB and C programmer (this was after many years in the IBM mainframe/COBOL world, which I gladly got out of :) ).

I would like to start out freelancing, which seems to be the rage these days, like on RentACoder.com, and either stay independent or "get a job" somewhere.

What would be the best direction for studies?

Thanks for your consideration! :D

both, java is great for standalone apps and web, while php is just web, so both is best...it allows you to offer more skills and abilities to potential employers/clients then just one or the other...

I was in the IBM mainframe/COBOL world for some years. Literally "Country and Western Hillbilly programming...Gawd!

Definitely pursue the PHP. Also the Java, and the VB/c skills
should not get rusty..
