WPM typing?

Just tried a simple test over here:
http://speedtest.10-fast-fingers.com/
My average was about 52 WPM...not bad for a software developer that spends most of his time thinking not typing.
I got only 3-4 words wrong each time, I tried 5 times.
What is your average?

314 points, so you achieved position 51965 of 624446 on the ranking list
You type 419 characters per minute
You have 76 correct words and
you have 0 wrong words
76 words per minute

90wpm as per this more realistic test
also the words disappearing as I type them distracts my eye and slows me down on that test, I'm used to the text I type staying there.

Holy moses I got schooled.
May I ask, do you all type properly...that is your fingers start at (ASDF JKL:)
I only type with first 3 fingers and use my thumb for space bar...rarely do I ever use my pinky finger. QUite often my right hand will dominate much of the typing as well...

Yep, I type properly. I used to cheat my right hand over to type the 'G', but since I got my ergonomic keyboard, that's not an option anymore.

Capitalization slows me down, I type all the letters properly but I have a bad habit of not using the right fingers for shift, so same goes for punctuation, to clarify I mean that you're supposed to use shift on the left hand side if the key you're modifying is on right hand side, and visa versa, and not slow yourself down by trying to hit shift and the key youre modifying with the same hand ( which is easy enough to do which is why the bad habit forms, but the cumulative effect of doing that when typing long texts slows me down )

I use my left pinky and occassionally my left ring finger for shift. My right thumb for SPACE.
I know I don't type properly but I type fast enough considering 99% of my time is spent looking at code and making minor tweaks. I just seen a job ad for a data entry clerk and thought Hmmm...I wonder if I'd pass the test.
25 WPM was the minimum which I practically doubled so I thought I was doing good...until I asked here.

Haha.

Yes, I use them all. But I deliberatly learnt using them 5 or so years ago. There are some programs to learn fast typing. Step by step lessons etc. Just decided that if staying 10hours infront of keyboard the least should be that hands/fingers are somehow equally stressed. It's kinda nasty when numbers are involved, I'd say my performance drastically falls there but still quite ok. Most important thingy when learning fast typing is to type correct not to try to be fast. If you're typing correct at some point great speed will come without even noticing. Just requires some patience.

Typing can be improved by only proper finger usage i.e. ASDFG ;lkjh. This gives a mindset for the characters and it is this finger usage on the keys that increases the character per minute speed.

You know people who use other keyboard layouts then QWERTY are laughing at us, QWERTY is designed to slow you down, we're fighting an uphill battle

Can you give us some more on that - links etc. What are those speedy layouts etc? And by laughing, what wpm do you think they hit?

Dvorak is another layout - I think it's alphabetical so the learning curve is lower.

I have never really given that much thought...but I'm guessing much research has gone into the keyboard layout...
That probably explains the somewhat chaotic layout of keys or what would seem to be random anyways.
I should switch to a dvorak and see how I adapt.
It's weird how fast you develop the muscle memory in your fingers though. I just bought a new keyboard and the home and end keys are in different spots...it took me about a week or two to stop hitting the delete key when I was trying to return home or to the end of a document.
