That's why it's called "axiom" - don't ask any questions and thanks for all the fish!Laura-Jane wrote:Hehe, but why does the winter matter? If it was summer would you think differently?VladSun wrote: No - that's an axiomA statement based on practice

Smilies are ridiculous...but they're important at the same time. They totally change the tone and let the reader know where the writer is coming from.
I wish we had smilies in real life. Life would be simpler!

Re: WTH?
Ugh...if everyone that talked to me smiled (Disclaimer: The following in no way reflects the beliefs, behaviors or business practices of PCSpectra -- show me the money and I'm 110% professional) I'd probably walk around with a handful of rolled pennies with my fist cocked ready to release on the goofiest face.Happy faces make the world a better place!
Actually steel boots...if I broke my fist I couldn't write software.
Of course it wouldn't hurt if more people genuinely smiled, initiated hand shakes, and randonly hugged strangers, etc. I think the world could use a lot of improvement. The Pope for instance, should probably be replaced by a homosexual Aetheist. Women in small village Africa should probably be given the status of President of the United States. I should probably be Knighted and maybe awarded a few Nobel Prize(s) -- is that word singular or plural...like mices and mouses...hahaha.
I find them confusing...in a forum board like this where the population is 99% Male...when another dude winks at me...I'm not sure what to think:Smilies are ridiculous...but they're important at the same time. They totally change the tone and let the reader know where the writer is coming from.
a. He likes me, despite never having seen my face, but he likes me for me and my personality -- no I'm not a teenage girl
b. He's winking to suggest my inexperience, naievty, etc and he knows better -- kick in the balls in real life
Best statement of 2008!
It's 4 minutes past Xmas eve...and I'm sitting here all alone...the Internet is my home and this forum my virtual soup Kitchen or Salvation Army...I still have to buy presents...I hate XMAS shopping...I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to blink...
Does anyone have the number to Doctor Phil?

No winking, no
It's so cold here right now, if I winked, my eyelids would be hermetically sealed and I wouldn't be able to see the keyboard, at least out of one eye, until spring when my face thawed.

Most communication in nonverbal, and the smilies are an unverbose way of emulating inaudable communications. My guess is people put the wink to convey sarcasm where only voice tone would have done otherwise, ahhh who am I kidding man, I've had a little crush on you ever since we met

Hah. One time I hired ( and subsequently fired for being incompetent ) a female PHP coder, I dont think anyone here would disagree that that would be an ideal companion
She actually called me up several months later but she turned out to be kind of a nut.
ps. I was referring to you, PCspectra... haha not Chris
What can I say your code is so *hawt*

Hehe, see, now I'm confused, because that smilie is kind of a weird one...Chris Corbyn wrote:Best statement of 2008!
Look at that smilie right there. He's not happy. And he's not sad. What is he? What does he mean exactly? He looks a bit shocked, but other than that is he completely without emotion?? (Um, inserting one of these to take the edge off:
This thread is getting a bit crazy, but that's okay, right?
Ah man, I feel for you. I felt like this for a number of years, which made me hate Christmas. One year I did all my Christmas shopping in a drugstore one-and-a-half-days before Christmas. I was not very happy about that. You're standing there, looking at pre-packaged box sets of junk thinking, "Is this good enough? Will this work?" Hehe, ugh, I hate doing that!PCSpectra wrote:I still have to buy presents...I hate XMAS shopping...I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to blink...
My solution to all this was to move 6000 kilometres away from my entire family. Now, I don't have to buy presents for anyone because we all decided that I'm too far away. It's awesome. We just send cards. I can handle cards.
