Look at that smilie right there. He's not happy. And he's not sad. What is he?
Shocked or it's choking or sat on a thumb tack...
This thread is getting a bit crazy, but that's okay, right?
Crazy? I thought it was casual.  :drunk:
One year I did all my Christmas shopping in a drugstore one-and-a-half-days before Christmas
Walmart...Shoppers Drug Mart...the local mall...same diff.
was not very happy about that. You're standing there, looking at pre-packaged box sets of junk thinking, "Is this good enough? Will this work?" Hehe, ugh, I hate doing that!
Meh...the way I see it...I have to pretend to be excited and happy about gifts that are otherwise useless to me. I've told everyone a million times, if you don't know what to buy, get me books, especially computer books and I'd genuinely be happy. Instead I get USB thumb drives (which I already have a dozen of) or weird hardware which I never use, like a Graphire pen pad w/ mouse...I can't draw on standard paper what makes people think I'd be able to draw using an virtual pen any better??? :banghead:

I am not a fan of popular culture, so buying me magazines, music, etc is not a good idea. I dress casual not fancy, so nice shirts, etc...meh I'd rarely use them. Oddly my sister bought me a brilliant gift. In the summer I was visiting her and complained about how my mother never bought me a rubber duck, like Ernie from sesame street.

A simple $3 toy you can buy at any drug store and I never got one. Imagine my surprise when at nearly 30 years of age, my sister buys me, not just a rubber duk, but a massive rubber duck. Like King Kong rubber duck. That was awesome.

Whats with people who give you money? What is that? I have a job, don't give me money, go buy a texas mickey or something and give me that. Make a donation to animal rescue shelter and show me the recipet, anything but money...makes everythig feel so fake.
My solution to all this was to move 6000 kilometres away from my entire family. Now, I don't have to buy presents for anyone because we all decided that I'm too far away. It's awesome. We just send cards. I can handle cards.
Ha...I've thought about that...although 6000 is pretty far...my family is scattered all across Canada so I wouldn't really be able to escape the giftmas season. :P

Maybe I should move somewhere in the South Pacific...somewhere warm...so I don't even think about cold and Christmas...work from my laptop on a beach...drinking martini's like James Bond...

Does anyone know if they have high speed Internet on remote islands anywhere? :P

Hehe, this is my favourite topic ever. There are hundreds of freelancers and consultants who call themselves "location independent professionals" and they either run their businesses from tropical places like the South Pacific. Or they travel all over the world on a continuous basis--they are perpetual travelers.

There's lots of high-profile people who do this, but the Ta'eeds are the most high-profile freelancers who do this that I can think of. (They run Envato, Eden, Freelance Switch, etc. from all over the world while they travel to places like Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, the US, wherever.)

So, yep, there's internet on lots of remote islands. :)

Hmmm...I need to follow these high profile freelancers me thinks. Probably wouldn't hurt to spend more time on PR/Advertising as opposed to online forums.

Give people something of value and you'll do what no PR campaign can do though.

Sure, to some degree. Equally true, you could have the greatest widget in the world and if no one knows it exists, it is effectively useless.

There is an old adage that goes something like: "It's not what you know, it's who you know"

Half of my family originated from around them parts, ended up in Canada, so now I was thinking something a little warmer, sunny, dry, exotic.

Not that the South Pacific is sunny, but the median temperature in Hawaii is something like +25C -- which is pretty damn nice for January -- especially when you live where I do.

I'm curious though, by 6000KM did she mean, jump the Pond or skip across the country? I would guess the distance from Vancouver to Newfoundland is around 6000KM+ if you drove the Trans-Canada -- helluva a road trip...I'd love to do that one day...the farthest/furthest I have ever drove was to Oshkosh Wisconsin for the EAA air show...that was awesome too...I love road trips...but plane trips are equally entertaining and breif as well so thats nice sometimes...

Oddly, I've been on an airplane at least 2-3 times a year since birth and I have never flown farther than Dallas Texas...me thinks I need to travel more...

Cheers,
Alex

It takes both, methinks! Balance is key.

I can see how you'd think this way regarding what I wrote. But I failed to mention that I have an amazing relationship with my family members, I am just not into giving meaningless gifts. I am all about spending quality time and attention with my family (writing letters, phoning all the time, emailing, spending money on a flight to go visit, etc.) but I don't like spending money just for the sake of spending money. There are more creative ways to show your love.

It's all relative!

Good question. We drove from BC to PEI, which is where we live now. We drove across Canada in the middle of winter, and we slept in our car along the way for 28 freezing-cold nights. It was quite the adventure. We did pass through Winnipeg, and slept in the parking lot at the Pan Am pool, I think it was called. That was a cold night, I remember that one! I blogged about the whole trip. :)

Balance is important, sure.

Ummm...hate to break it to you but you went the wrong way.

You know that song: Go West, life is peacful there, go West...blah blah blah

I love my Country, Coast to Coast, so personally it doesn't matter where you live, so long as your happy to call Canada home. ;)

Cheers,
Alex
