Which Browser Would You Use If It Had Firebug?
If every browser had a Firebug equivalent, which web browser would you use and why?

By all means, Opera. I use it even without Firebug. There simply is no substitute.

Firefox, because it has Web Developer Toolbar too.

+1 FF
Cause it's the best I have used so far. IE is propriatary and requires "OS" with it to work. I am not installing whole "OS" just to browse the net

I did.who voted for IE?
For browsing I use IE and in my experience it's just faster -- although the load time is insane with Google toolbar installed. Speed is the most critical factor for me when "browsing" the web. Security issues I can usually work around, by either disabling JS or using a virtual system to check out suspicious web sites or software.
I suppose if the context was set FireBug -- obviously development not just casual browsing. In which case I would prefer FF as it offers superior tools for client side development. That being said I only usually use jQuery which hides most of the difficult stuff from me and I don't really need FireBug anymore. So I dunno, tough call, FF is really "just another browser" both have their pros and cons, although I do like the extensions provided by FF community

Alex

Immediate and permanent BAN!!!!PCSpectra wrote:I did.who voted for IE?![]()
Do you work for microsoft?
IE faster? no chance! My watch is faster
Use a virtual machine just to check out suspect websites and/or turn off JS??? No need, just use a real browser, one that has not got so many security issues. Too much hassle to find a work arounds.
Every other browser is better than IE, and I mean it. I am not just trying to be difficult. But IE really BLOWS! really really really BLOWS!!! Dont get me started on their OS - thats another story
What I dont understand is why they cant make at least one of their browser standards compliant?!!? Care to shed some light on this.

BAN FOR LIFE!!PCSpectra wrote:I did.who voted for IE?

Seriously... did you ever compare IE to Opera in terms of speed? (not intending a browser-flamewar here, but curious if people have actually checked out Opera and prefer IE nonetheless)
Re: Which Browser Would You Use If It Had Firebug?
Can we refrain from calling for people to be banned for things like using IE. It just makes us look silly.
Besides, IE7 is actually a pretty good browser. I use it occasionally.

Market forces. What I dont understand is why they cant make at least one of their browser standards compliant?!!? Care to shed some light on this.
They have a monopoly and do not "need" to support standards. Other browsers do, because they realize their market share is predominently developers, whose job is made far easier when they can write HTML once and expect it to work in every other browser, except IE.
In the end, FF, OP, SF, IE, they are all out to capture their market...they do and say anyting to accomplish that, some more or less noble than others.
The fact is, while running on Windows, the trident engine is hands down faster than Opera, FireFox or any other browser, except maybe minimalist experiements.
#1 The Windows shell is an instance of the same engine that powers IE, so it's always present and always running and probably highly tuned for that reason. All other browsers will not have this advantage.
#2 Microsoft are notorious to using undocumented API's to give their applications and edge, I assure that IE and it's Trident engine are no different.
#3 Any cross platform application (FF, OP, etc) uses additional abstraction layers that essentially requires the API use only the lowest common denmominator of underlying methods (usually). While the abstraction is minimal in overhead, especially in compiled applications, it is still overhead.
Firefox also renders it's interface using XUL/JavaScript whereas toolbars, tabbs, etc in IE are native Windows controls -- the last time I checked which was probably 4-5 years ago during a similar discussion...
Performance-wise I think it's a tough sell to actually beat IE. There are some annoying design decisions which could improve performance, much like what Google chrome does with it's one process per tab approach. IE frequently hangs if you have to many tabs open at once because of this error in design, but I personally, rarely have more than a dozen tabs open at once, 5 or 6 at best. If I want to look at questionable material I use virtualization, which is bullet proof, not just "sorta safer". I actually only disable JavaScript because I hate popup windows and excessive use of AJAX. Unfortunately keeping JS enabled is almost required these days, with site like facebook failing to funciton with it disabled.
Each has it's pro and cons...FF is definetely the developers browser...with all it's extensions it makes development easier...IE is and will probably remain the dominent end-user browser for years to come as it's fully capable of meeting the demands of a basic user and security only concerns people when "they" have been affected, not when "you" have been affected.
Cheers,
Alex
Re: Which Browser Would You Use If It Had Firebug?
IE will remain dominant since it's the default browser shipped with the dominant OS. Most people are not technical/knowledgable/caring enough to switch browsers - and somehow IE market dominance is continually shrinking. If they had a good product, with their market monopoly - they should be crushing the opposition, not constantly giving up market share..IE is and will probably remain the dominent end-user browser for years to come as it's fully capable of meeting the demands of a basic user
IE7 is much better than IE6, but it's still holding back the web with it's proprietary technologies and lack of standards compliance. Not that I expect Microsoft to know better based on their track record, but they certainly can not be commended for this.
