Sleep Deprivation

Well, I've been pulling all-nighters for three days now. I can't get out of my chair so I'm just going to keep coding. The hallucinations are pretty weird. Probably because I OD'd on black coffee. Also, I'm having a hard time typing — my fingers feel like lead. Vision's going all funky. Anyone else been here before?

Gonna have to catheterize myself... :(

Oh, my quip was in reference to pulling all-nighters for three days. By that time, it's Monday for me :) I find when I get to a certain point it's nearly impossible to sleep, but one thing that helps is to zone out to some music in a relaxing chair or couch, or read, until my brain just says that it's time to sleep :)

Not from sleep deprivation

Seriously dude. Hit the sack, you'll go out like a light once your brain stops working overtime.

Drink water not coffee. Caffiene will keep you wired, Coke, Coffee, Tea, Red Bull, etc...

Honestly man, I did that in my early 20's thinking I would get more work done. While I might have got more done, it was far more frustrating for me and just not worth it. I probably wasted more time getting frustrated and having to re-think solutions constantly.

Set yourself a limit of 12-14 hours/day at most, then sleep.

Excersize really helps me unwind at days end, a few hours before bed so your not all pumped trying to get some sleep.

Your cortisol levels are highest at end of day so it's best to excersize in the evenings not first thing in the morning -- subjective I suppose but I personally prefer it.

Man I remember the days I used to do this. Sucked! "programmers eyes" are a definite distinctive characteristic. Yellowish eyes.. almost looks like there's always a shadow.

Force yourself to sleep. I set myself a bedtime recently and stuck to it. I feel 100x better throughout the day.

Sleep deprivation is a very effective form of torture! Why do it to yourself? :P

Not getting sleep is the second quickest way to die after not breathing if you don't fulfill the essentials of all life forms. Not eating and drinking you can last I think a week or two maybe or something...not sure, never really in to reading about that sort of human "potential" or whatever...more like torture.

I always thought that all sea life was close to the shores and turns out they are all over even where the oceans are thousands of feet deep. So then I wondered how the hell fish sleep without falling in to the crushing oblivion below? Turns out they only have half of their brains sleep while the other half is alert. So for two third of the day or so they are half conscious and for the other third fully conscious.

But yeah don't kill yourself for any project. There's pushing yourself and then there's putting your own life in danger.

You don't work as efficiently and make so many more mistakes when you don't sleep that it isn't worth staying up. If you're schedule is too full it's time to decide what to toss. Mixing stimulants and a lack of sleep is an easy way to commit suicide if you have a heart problem you don't know about, as well. Not everyone is built to be awake for extended periods. I can do about 3 nights and a day before I pass out, if I'm sober (from caffiene, too). It's not the stimulants that make you hallucinate it's the lack of sleep. You should get yourself into bed before you black out or pass out. You don't want to fall on your way somewhere and crack your head open.

You should visit Nepal sometimes, 16hrs of no electricity/day... you will be doing whatever you were doing before minus all the coding/typing
