php vs. the beast

i recently read an article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau ... t.asp?_r=1 , aside from being a shamless plug for creativity-robbing-industry-stealing-greedy-ass m$ product i found the article intriguing.
one of my clients asked me why people use php and not some m$ product instead. i was just wondering what is y'alls take on this. i feel that open source products (apache/php) have become so popular because it doesn't cost a friggin' fortune to learn.
am i being idealistic in thinking that the appeal in open source is driven by a desire to become better developers? and that m$ won't completely wipe out open source because the desire to code is bigger than the $$?
