this is good, lets discuss rates:

Full time gig => tend to take much less $ because benefits,
stability, regular check have value. Get what you can!
Northeast US 35-60k/year developer compensation doe.

Contract work => I get $75-$100 an hour with a few
gimmes here and there. Build relationships and
offer a full line of service. Hit the big guys where it counts lol.

Free => teach in venues like this to enable others to succeed.
Help them, but do not do all the work for them. Used to
stock tractor trailers until I realized that - you can
accomplish almost anything if you focus and work for it.

would like to hear about contract rates in your area-- lets raise the bar!

With me, I develop PHP for free because I enjoy making things people will use. I probably will never charge for any of my work. If I do it will probably be just to cover the expenses of the web hosting. I have a job, why do I need to charge for my work?

I think when you have a family you'll see things differently :)

As of right now, I don't feel I need to charge. I even have a near commercial product. I have had offers from people to purchase a copy of a beta version of FastBanner 3.0. I turned them down because its my hobby. I'm currently working on adding fonts for version 4. I may charge if I get some intrest. As of now I'm still planning on releasing it for free.

I could use a few free programmers. While I'm out fishin on the boat landing a couple o' 20lb striped bass, you all can make the money.... and to reinforce JP's point keep shoes on the kids feet..

I have projects if you need them!

Here at regional forums it is always discussed...
If you have learned and get those skills for free why do you want to make money with it.
At the end we decided to make our way, creating libraries and reusable clases etc, in otherwords programing some useful things for free may be acceptable but specialized work is not.(There were a lot of requests for free work.)
At the end maybe you can give some hours on your friends work but not the others...

JPlush76 some times you don' t need to change it if you have enough income from a different area. My teacher, for example, helps people in trouble in C++. (Mostly he re code every thing :)) But he doesn't ask for anything. May be I can do so, if I have an income over 6M$ per year in a country like here :D

(sorry for mistakes of usage of English on some areas, may be I am thinking in a regional way...)

I didn't learn for free. As I'm sure most people here didn't learn for free. How many countless hours of your time have you spent learning? I purchased books, that costs money as well. If you think your time is worthless then you need to take a look at your life. Your time should be the most valuable thing you have.

You only have so many hours in your lifetime, they can never be reclaimed. I make an investment in my time and like all investments I hope that it returns at a higher rate for me in the future.

Oh a misunderstanding of subject, I was only telling you that if a human has a satisfying income from another field may be he or she can do sth free without thinking twice on it. Now I see that having a family mostly makes you to have less free hours, at this point you are right ;).

Just to add my tupenny's worth....

Yes doing code for free is all well and good I you have a supplimentary income. Some of us don't.

I run my own software house, our (my) primary language is PHP (seconded by perl). Why? Not really because it's cheaper (although does play a major factor), but because its portable...

If one of our clients decides they want a M$ server then fine, no code changes. I make a point of writing cross platform applications.

The problem I face is that while a company seems quite willing to fork out 10's of thousands of pounds on a M$ solution, plus licences, the same companies seem to think that if you develop using free resources then your producyts must be free. Yes, we are cheeper as a result, but we still took time developing it. We still have to give the same amount of support when are uses decide they have forgotten how to use a mouse.

Ok, I'm gonna end the rant now before I really go off the wall.
