I posted an answer earlier, but after a while I deleted it - I realized that "Why Linux Still Sucks & how to improve it!" was not the discussion I was willing to participate in.
JAB - I'm a happy Windows user since 3.1 (not to mention DOS ... hm, I don't remember - the version before 5.0) and I'm also a happy Linux (Slackware and Debian) user since 2003 year. So - who is more objective - you or me? Just because you still don't know anything about using Linux (I can see it from your posts) doesn't make it "it sux!".
I don't know if it's so much a matter of being objective or not...

I think these discussions are mostly driven by frustration. JAB is clearly not interested in learning the ins and outs of Linux, which no one can really blame him for. Windows does do a great job and making a computer easy to use, at least easier than Linux.

After using Windows for as long as many of us have we become spoiled by some aspects only to be disappointed by others.

Just now IE crashed (assumingly because of the Google toolbar -- which when loaded slows the startup to a 15 second lapse).

It irritates me when software crashes or acts in ways that are no expected, this is what usually drives most people to seek alternative solutions. So we find them, like FireFox and use that instead, until one day that otherwise perfect peice of software does something unexpected and the cycle continues.

There will never be perfect software -- in our life time anyway. :)

Cheers,
Alex

Every OS is designed for a certain type of user; no OS is designed for everyone. Use whatever you like the most, but if it's free and open source you have no right to complain about it. Either improve it yourself or don't use it.

Just imagine that you started learning computer stuff by using Linux and not Windows ...
MS is very "noble" about giving free of charge copies of Windows to schools, kinder gardens, universities, etc.

All I can say is, let's see if some government or whatever can take away my Linux. Not over my dead body. They'd have to pry my cold, dead hands off my Ubuntu Linux. Granted, though, it's not for everyone. For everyone else, I recommend a Mac.

In some ways I'd be better off, in other ways, not so much. I would have liked to have learned Linux earlier, but as a developer I want to work on source code not figuring how to compile on a foriegn system, get the OS running smoothly and all that jazz. :P

Ideally there would be an operating system that merged both Windows and Ubuntu, and did everything right and nothing wrong. Unfortunately the reality is, for the time being, we are forced to use both or one or the other. I prefer using both, I find all of my needs can be met nicely with the right combination.

Especially when I have your assistance when I run into problems with *Nix. :D

I no longer use Linux very often, but I was a Redhat user way back in the day. It's weird to check out the latest from SuSe and Ubuntu, kinda like waking up in the future. The user experience has improved so much in that short span it's almost unbelievable. When I started using Linux it was inconceivable to do a fresh install on even a mainstream HP laptop and expect it to work without a considerable amount of effort.

Linux has it backwards and I unfortunately have to attribute that to the developer mentality.
If it wasn't for the "developer mentality", would Linux even exist?

Plus I don't understand the argument. Both have command lines? So what's different about linux's other than it is more flexible? All modern distros come with GUI package managers.

and the counter argument to "why must I use a terminal" is "why must I use a GUI when all I need to do is type 'ping http://www.google.com'" or some such and get the job done in a fraction of the time compared to loading up a GUI, burrowing through menus/options etc.

A lot of people are intimidated by the terminal, and there is a bit of a learning curve. It's true beauty is only discovered through it's use.
