Suggestions for alternative editor to SuperEdi?

I first started out with Frontpage 98 and while I shiver to even imagine using that even several years ago it's where I started. I eventually just started using Notepad because Frontpage 98 would start changing things I set. Eventually I ended up using SuperEdi and I don't remember why.

Well I didn't start using SuperEdi for syntax highlighting but as I've used it for I think the past two or three years I've really gotten used to it, except when it breaks. Unfortunately it breaks often enough to irritate the heck out of me. After finally finding the author's email (with insanely over aggressive anti-spam tools implemented in to the contact form) the he emailed me essentially saying he wasn't interested in fixing the couple of bugs I mentioned. :(

The tab feature and syntax highlighting in JavaScript and PHP are what are most important, and the fact that it doesn't take even a hundredth of the time to open as say, [insert random Adobe product here].

I'm not interested in a premium editor, just one that will be able to highlight XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL mixed together (though I hardly ever have more then two languages mixed though many combinations of) without the editor breaking the syntax highlighting.

Also SuperEdi's CTRL+D option (FTP) annoys me because I sometimes hit that instead of CTRL+S and if anything is filled it then the program freezes and it +20 to my aggro.

While not insanely import it would be nice to have restore tabs on startup and crash like Firefox does. :)

Suggestions please?

UltraEdit is the most robust editor I have ever used, admittedly I have never heard of SuperEdi but I have used countless editors over the years. The only editor that I would say beats UltraEdit is the IDE that ships with Visual Studio applications.

Then again, it's a full blown IDE whereas ultra edit is more of a light weight editor, although you can absolutely cusotmize UE to act much like a full scale IDE. I use a series of custom scripts, PHP scripts and tools to essentially make UE a IDE tweaked exactly to my development style.

I like being able to cusotmize software to that degree, and while not perfect UE beats everything I have tried, especially those Java powered editors or editors which use Scintilla as an editor -- which most OSS projects do...it' horrendous!

UE is my two cents. :)

$49/USD for a single license is not bad and there support is top-notch.

Your best bet is to read through the "Favorite Editors" thread.

I used to use Notepad++ and it restores tabs on startup by default which was a nice feature. The syntax highlighting seemed nice and robust too. I only use it for quick edits now though as I've moved onto using the NetBeans IDE (which also restores tabs on startup) as I find the project browser and debugging facilities very handy (as well as code autocomplete).

+1 for UltraEdit

Been using it for ages. I compared it to quite some alternatives over the years, but sticked with UltraEdit every time. For me, it's second to none.

Here here...I guess brilliant minds think alike. :)

It truly does kick ass though...I don't think it's ever crashed, it's fast loading, integrated with every tool I can imagine and it's editor and code folding, column selection, scripting support, etc make it such a versatile editor...

I should really get paid for being a UE evangelist. :P
