Does anyone really believe the true purpose of this law has anything to do with children?

No. Very scary stuff.
It would only be acceptable if it were possible for civilians to investigate (secretly or not) all the data from intelligent agencies in return. But of course that's never allowed.

It seems like this is a bill that would never pass for any other purpose. They slap this reasoning on it saying it's to protect our children and suddenly it's ok. It doesn't seem right and I hope it doesn't pass.

If I'm right they have similar bills here in Europe. But then the term is 3 or 6 months.
Things like this just get on your nerves. Reminds me of this movie I saw two years ago

Can we say RIAA? In our society we all need money to get by, but the evil of greed (beyond comfortably wealthy) knows no bounds.

RIAA? If you mean the recording industry, what has that to do with this?

They are certainly ones to benefit from this though it overall has more of a 1984 feel to it. The people in power do fear the people...so what better way to keep tabs on who is a 1776-like threat then to keep tabs on those likely to overthrow a repressive regime? But this goes a bit too deep in to politics so I'll leave it at that.
